Are there less expensive, but still good quality fabrics, to use for tote bag/purse linings? A friend of mine showed me one she got at a craft sale, that had a different fabric (light color), than the rest of the tote. What do you guys think?

    Quilting cotton?
    Cotton drill?
    Canvas?
    Denim?
    Parachute cloth?

Really ... whatever you want to use!
Sometimes the lining is as pretty as the outside ... or can be done so as to make it reversable.
And too, depends somewhat on what the end use will be!

I usually just use cotton, but if you want it more stable then maybe try a decorator weight or pant weight fabric.

Sometimes I use muslin or drapery lining. I always face it though so it looks good. I also learned never to use black no matter how much I have of it, how nice it is or how striking it looks with my other fabric. I still think things are lost in the bottom of that bag.

 I am so with you on this  .... and am always annoyed at store bought purses with all the dark linings!

Absolutely why I am always on the look out for bright coloured wallets and changepurses ..... amidst all the classic blacks, browns .... ick!
