I'm assuming it's a 6" FINISHED block; 6 1/2 "UNFINISHED. You would cut your strips 6 1/2" x 2 1/2" and make sure to square them up.

You could make the outside stips 2.5 by 6.5 and the middle stips 1.5 by 6.5. Then your squares for the corners of the snowball block would need to be 2.5 to match up with the wider strips. I don't think you'll have much luck dividing into even width strips. 5.5 doesn't divide by 3. There may be a formula somewhere, but I don't know where.

If you are trying to match up 3 2.5 inch strips (3 Rail Fence) with a Snowball, I would sew 2.5 inch squares facedown onto the corner of the 6.5 inch square you're using for your snowball. Then clip the corners and flip up the remaining triangle.

Here's a link that shows Snowball & 9 Patch which is sort of what you're doing only you're using Rail Fence instead of the 9 Patch.

Here's one that just shows the Snowball: http://www.quilterscache.com/S/SnowballBlock.html

You need to cut your strips 2.33 inches wide. If you haven't cut your snowballs yet, it might be easier to change their size than to try to cut in thirds when rulers are marked in quarters. If your snowballs are 6.5 inches, then your strips can be 2.5 inches. Three strip block will have 2 seams, not one, so you need to add one inch. This block will finish at 6 inches.

If you decide to go with 2.33, put two pieces of tape on the ruler once you determine where 2.33 is. Saves trying to find it again and again.
