I have never taken quilting classes but I would love to make a twist quilt. Do you need a special tool to do it? If so could someone post a picture of it. And do you think it is something a new quilter could do? Is it too complicated?

Check out my post by searching "AAQI latest #33". There are 3 sizes of the twister ruler. You just have be very careful sewing it together. This project I would cut 2 blocks ... Sew them together so I didn't get mixed up.

When I made my twister quilt, I only cut out one row at a time, sewed it, then sewed the next row as I knew I would get mixed up if I tried doing it any other way. Depending on how large of a quilt you are making, you will probably want either the middle (original) size or the larger size twister tool.

I am not sure how to find past posts, but I know there are lots of discussions here on the Twister Quilt. Some people have made their own "tool" by using a small square ruler, and marking it their selves. Perhaps you can do a search here on this board.

Although you can easily make your own ruler, I really like the actual tool. It has little feet in the corners which raise it up a bit so it doesn't rock and wiggle when you place it over the join where the 4 patches come together. Also, if you have a turntable cutting mat, this is the place to use it! It makes cutting all 4 sides a breeze.

joanns has a twister ruler with different sizes on it and you can use a coupon, cost me 10bucks with coupon

The last twister I made was using a 6" fabric square and the custom twister square was 4-1/4", I found when I was using my rotery cutter that I was over cutting and going into the next square space....so until I really got my sea-legs on this project, I ended up tracing around several blocks with a pencil first, then cut out with rotery cutter. I also can not stress strongly enough the importance of keeping your blocks in order, otherwise you are going to have one heck of a puzzle when you are done (ask me how I know!!!) If you have a planning board this is when to use it....This is my last twister, it was done a little different from others I have seen with a white block between each color block...just gives a different look....

there you go. love my twister. Just be sure to lay out and keep them as you do them. I laid out 2 rows as I cut them, sewed them together tucked top row under and laid out row three sewed then kept doing it that way.
