I've used perle cotton, also. When I tied my first quilt, I was taught to space the ties the width of my palm. I tied the first bed quilt I made. It's been washed many, many times and dried in the dryer, and it has held up really well.

An index card makes a good guide for tying. I use a long piece of emb. floss, and take a stitch every 4-6 inches until I run out of floss. then I cut in between stitches and tie. It goes quicker that way for me.
