There are lots of suggestions for people to "practice, practice, practice" before beginning FMQ on a quilt. But what to do with the practice pieces?????
Use fat quarter size fabrics and make at least one side colorful and you can make tote bats, QAYG car blankets (for carrying in the trunk for emergency picnics), and what else???? Use them for comfort quilt...QAYG (with both sides usable)...potholders, placemats, tablerunners...
You can also practice painting on them either before or after you've finished your quilting.

OK. You can make small quilts for charity and practice on them. Whoever gets them will love them anyway.
Although you might want a few 'real' practice pieces first to keep in your file to later look at and see how much you have improved.
