Years ago my grandmother gave me a hand made quilt. It was squares of white with appliqued umbrellas with the handle on each square. I wish I still had it but the material just rotted away and I didn't know how to fix it. So it was thrown away . but, each piece of the umbrella was a different color and it had embroidery stitches around the out side of the umbrella or as my grandmother called them a bumble shoot. I wish I had a picture of it to show but, does anyone know where I might find the pattern for this? The squares were surrounded with blue fabric and it was my favorite blanket as a child.

I didn't find a pattern but I found one on ebay. Is this what your quilt looked like?

No, afraid not. Mine was all different colors in the umbrella itself. the umbrella was the center motif within a 5 or 8 inch square with blue trim around each square. I have never seen another one like it. My great, great great Aunt made it for my grammy and she gave it to me when I was 15.

Could you just get a picture from , say, coloring pages to use as a template for the applique ? Applique that down to the square ?

This would be worth a try. Make only one block, put a sashing around it and see how you like it. If it isn't exactly like your GM's, it would certainly remind you of her -- which is a good thing. Good luck (and let us see what you come up with).

I remember that name - an unbrella was called a "bumbershoot". Strange how words come back that you haven't heard since childhood. Thanks for the memory, I hope you find your pattern.

I just googled "umbrella quilt picture". Before the websites are listed there were three small photos with the heading "Image Results". Enlarge the picture on the left and see if that's close to what you're looking for, it has different fabrics for each part of the umbrella, it's on a plain square of fabric surrounded by a solid border on each block. Hope this helps.
