First I want to thank everyone who commented and gave advice on my first thread;

about my stinky skunk smelling cutting mat and my request for help. You guys were wonderful.

This is what I did.
I took 1 pint of peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of Dawn dish detergent. I mixed it up really well and covered the mat with it. I let it dry for 1 hour.

Then I did it all over again and put it on the other side, same process.

Then I put it in the tub and showered it off. Then I put water in the bathtub, enough to cover the mat, put just about 1/4 cup of white vinegar in the water stirred it up.
I put the mat in the tub and let it soak for an hour, then rinsed it off again.

I hung it from my porch overhang and waited till it dried before sticking my nose real close and taking a wiff.

Well I must say a big "Thank You" to everyone because the smell is gone. I hope forever!!!!

I thought after all that the mat would have faded but not at all. It seems as good as new without the stinky skunk smell.

Thanks guys now I can go back to using my big green mat instead of my smaller Wal-Mart cutting mat.

Too funny! The same recipe for actual skunk spray worked. Glad you can use your mat now.

Glad you got the smell out -

BUT -

Why should anyone have to work that hard on making a product usable?

I did notice the smell when I first bought these mats but I just used them as they were! Too much trouble and no one knew how to get the smell out but that was a long-long time ago.

Absolutely great question. I've had it over 6 months and am very sensitive to smells. I just thought eventually the odor would fade...not so.

(The first thread has all that I'd done.)

So I came to the group with the question and got so much wonderful comments, suggestions and support. Just wanted to be sure my update and thanks did not get lost in the old thread...

That recipe works on dogs who have encountered a skunk too.
I know from experience :(

oh my goodness Gale, when I first saw this posting, I thought a skunk had got to your mat and I was wondering what you were doing with your mat out in the yard LOL
