    Default Very Old Singer

Hi. I have an old Singer sewing machine. I am pretty sure my father bought it for my mother in 1944 or 1945. The serial number is 5976398 with no letter prefix. I looked on one website and it said something that made no sense to me as far as a date was concerned. I am trying to figure out when this was manufactured. The label says made in U.S.A. Can anyone help?

Photos help for those who work on the machines or may even have one just like it. They would be able to give you more information. I can't but they can.

The information I have says it was made in 1883. That would be pretty old even in 1944 or 1945. Can you post a picture of the machine, and a close-up of the serial number?

It really helps to have a model number, as then you can at least get a range of dates for the machine's manufacture and narrow it down from there. If you Google "vintage Singer sewing machine" and then click on "images", you should be able to find a photo that matches your machine. This is an easy way to figure out the model if it's not marked on the machine.

dinster got it - the singer web site says it was made in 1883 but it doesn't give a model number. Their site also say: "For further information, contact SINGER® Consumer Affairs at 1-800-4-SINGER (1-800-474-6437)". and as others have said - if you have a photo, folks on this board can give you more information.

Is your machine a treadle (foot power, no motor) ? If not the 1883 date cannot be correct unless it was modified later. As other's have said, a picture would be very helpful in identifying it for you.

Ooh, this is interesting! If the 1883 date is correct, then it could only be a couple models. If you post a picture, someone can verify the model, and thereby indirectly confirm the date. If the 1883 date is incorrect (do you think your dad bought it new?), then we could sort that out with a picture as well.

Either way, you might want to put it in the Vintage Machines forum - lots of people there could help with identification, finding a manual, maintenance tips, etc. Oh, and everyone there likes pictures

Sorry to disappoint y'all! I was writing the wrong number down. It is AG276225 and was manufactured in 1941!I have pictures but can't figure out how to post them. Sorry!

No problem - it looks like you have a model 66, which is also a very nice, very functional machine. Congratulations! It has a nice large throat space, so it would be good for quilting. Singer has a manual here http://www.singerco.com/uploads/download/41_66.pdf that you can download if you need it. Enjoy it - a machine that's been in your family so long is worth hanging onto.

Thank you for that information. Yes, I think it is worth getting it restored. My mother didn't sew a lot, just alterations and the occasional mending , but she didn't take care with the machine so there is some minor cosmetic work that needs doing. I have had it for years, just never thought about using it until now.
