I was shopping at Walmart this week and while waiting for my hubby I browsed the fabric/craft section. They had even more than the last time I was there. Anyway I happened to to get to chatting with a nice lady who ran the department. she said sales have been increasing - especially fabric; wonder why, people can't afford to buy new clothes, at the current increased prices. . Also she said she know several ladies who are supporting them selves by selling at craft shows. As she said, " Those who can't must buy". Sadly she also said she could do more but the bosses won't listen to her.

So lets help - for those of us lucky enough to be able to buy- we need to support those who are selling. And we need to partronize those establishments that are responsive to our needs and wants...In short. I'm going to buy some more fabric this fall, and de-stash that stash I don't really want any more by giving it away or trading! Out with the old stash and in with the new!

I keep hearing about "quality" issues with Walmart purchased fabric. It's not just about thread count per inch. In some ways you can judge the quality of the fabric by sight and touch. At other times you find out after it's washed about colorfastness and preservatives or starches that were added to make it appear nicer than it really is. (positive or negative). One of the things I have noticed about some cheaper cottons are the density. You don't want to use fabric that is almost like gauze in a quilt usually.

The fabric I've seen at WalMart lately has been great.A lot has been AE Nathan.

They did have some of the thinner fabric for 1.50 but I know people who have to buy that because they can't afford anything else bless their hearts.

Last time I was in there they had new flannel that was reasonably priced and good quality.

I had the colorfast issue with a fabric that I purchased at JoAnn's a number of years ago. No matter how many times I washed that fabric it bled. Which, even being a prewasher, didn't realize until the quilt was completed. Gave the quilt with a box of color catchers and told Bro & SIL to NEVER wash that quilt without the color catchers. I don't think it ended up being an issue cuz I think SIL stuck it in a closet!

I am the last person to defend Walmart for several reasons. I do not shop there except to check the fabric dept. occasionally. I have never bought bad fabric from Walmart. It is just as good as what I buy anywhere else. I'm not saying they maybe don't have some lesser quality, but at any store I buy at I have to read the labels and check the quality before I buy it. One thing, I do not buy it if it is made in China.

They just put the fabric dept. back at my Walmart and it wont make it if its not improved.
It is very small and only one cart at a time in the isle.
No room around cutting table to wait but dosnt matter since no one comes when you ring the bell.

My last post I spoke of my walmart increasing fabric. They had some very nice fat quarters. We never lost our fabric, just cut down the dept area quite a bit. Well, looks like the aisle is wider. The time before last, woman in the dept, told me fabrics should be coming back end of the year or early next and where they were going to put it. My last time there, not much of a change, still mainly childrens fabric on bolts. Some solids. They put a display of some fabrics in the middle aisle, but, I was not very pleased with them as many were not quilt fabric quality

Fabric is back, kinda squished in, cutting table is barely a yard wide, real nice woman, had a great conversation with her, fabric is mixed, light weight and heavier, will just have to watch as I buy.

Well..let me tell you about my experiences at wally-world,
i do not like their cheap fabric- made in only god-knows-where, and i DO NOT and REFUSE to support wal-mart. I hardly ever go there, unless its a last resort, they are the biggest hipocrates, they say buy american, well, if stuff is not made in america any more, we cant, they have put too many good places out of business, and like the rest of the country, have outsourced. so if you buy a quilt its probably made in china, by some poor little chinese kid with sore fingers, or mexico, or where ever most of their stuff comes from.
