Warrior Games-Quilts Needed for Wounded Soldiers

First, to any of you who know how to request this, could this request kept on the first page?
Quilters: We need your help! We need 200 quilts by the end of April. Yep, I said 200 in about 6 weeks. In May, over 200 Wounded Warriors will arrive in Colorado Springs, Colorado for the Inaugural Warrior Games. We have been requested to supply 200 quilts, so that every warrior will know that we care.
Sizes needed are listed below.
If you wish to donate a UFO that's Great!! There is a website for long armers who have graciously volunteered to do the quilting at no cost.
Many of you have heard of the good things that my friend Alycia Carmin is doing for the wounded soldiers at Fort Carson Army Hospital in Colorado. Her ‘No Soldier Forgotten’ project has provided hundreds and hundreds of quilts to injured military men and women. She has also become involved with the World War II Quilts of Valor project, which provides quilts to soldiers from our nation’s greatest generation. I am sincerely grateful to her for her amazing generosity with our nation’s heroes, both young and old.
Alycia’s got a new project going on and she could use a little help with it. In May, over 200 veterans from all service branches of the military will be converging on Colorado Springs to compete in the inaugural Warrior Games, a joint effort between the US Department of Defense and the US Olympic Committee. The Warrior Games will provide an opportunity for wounded vets who wish to participate in adaptive sports and compete at a national level. Alycia has been asked to provide 200 (!) Quilts of Valor to this event in order that each and every competitor can be given a quilt as a small token of thanks from a grateful nation. Now, I have no doubt at all that Alycia’s secret identity is Superwoman (she not only coordinates all of these projects, but she’s also got 3 boys and a ranch to keep track of and, if you ask me, only Superwoman could keep up a! schedule like that!) but even Superwoman would have a heck of a time pulling 200 quilts out of thin air in less than two months. These are some press releases to let you know more about what the games are. This way I don’t say the same thing – and get it wrong.

I have been asked to help coordinate the delivery of 200 Quilts of Valor to this event, to get one out to each service member competing in the games. Wouldn’t this be really cool? I mean – we sometimes have to work really hard to get QOV’s to the appropriate soldiers, and get thru the proper channels. Yet this time, they want us, and are working with us to get our quilts to these soldiers.

I know many of you are already involved in QOV, and have heard from me about our Warriors in Transition unit, and here I am back again. I am hoping you still want to listen. This is a great opportunity to show service members from all branches, wounded service members – that we, as a grateful nation, are appreciative of what they have done. That we are proud of them for the progress and accomplishments they have made, even through their injuries, and that we would like to offer them our thanks.

So I am asking again – for you to get involved. I am asking for you to help make this a possibility for these service members. I, of course, will be quilting away as best I can to offer quilts to this project as well. Our chaplains are excited to see that we are willing to extend our beautiful creations to these participants in the Warrior Games.

Here are the Requirements:
Quilt Size – Minimum 50 x 60, Maximum 72 x 90
Machine Quilted preferably – either by Long-arm, or DSM
Need to be to me by May 1st 2010

How to get involved:
· First – if you can provide a completed quilt – AWESOME!! Send it on and then watch for it on my blog.
· Second – do you have a top that you think would fit the bill but need it quilted? You can go to www.qovf.org and request a Long Armer and they will set you up with a Longarm Volunteer. Please include the backing, binding and top and send it on. When the volunteer LA’er is finished they can send it on to me, and we will bind it and get it ready. Wouldn’t this be a good way to get some of your UFO’s finished and provide comfort and honor to a wounded soldier? And then of course – watch for it on my blog.
· Third – Start talking this up to all of your quilting friends. Maybe they have been looking for a project to get involved with – and this is it!

actually, I need you to send Alycia an email for the address. She is the one coordinating this effort. I got involved because I have the membership to the board. Her email address is: [email protected]
The label is up to you. You can do the normal name of the quilt, date, and your name. You could dedicate it to someone you care about, or dedicate it to a branch of the military (my father was in the army, so I might want to dedicate my quilt to the army) or dedicate it to the Wounded Warriors. Totally your choice.

Thanks to Vicky I am now logged on to the quilting boards. Wow what a group! I am so thankful to those of you who have emailed to send in Quilts of Valor for the Warrior Games in May. This is AWESOME!.
A few questions have been asked of me:
1. Sizes? Minimum 50 x 60 - largest 72 x 90
2. Colors? Most of the olympians will be men, but there will be women as well - so maybe think generic?
3. What is Quilts of Valor? It is the coolest group of quilters in the world, making quilts for those who have been wounded in the military. We have also done some special projects - such as WWII vets.
