Default Need help with ideas for quilting guild

I am a newbie so I hope I am doing this correctly. Here goes . . I am the leader of a small quilting group. This is our third year of being together. Unfortunately, most of the monthly activity ideas fall on me. My brain is exhausted - all one brain cell. : ) Would you please share some of the things you have done in your quilt groups? Thanks - wendy

Well I'm not in a quilt group so I don't know what is ok to do and what isn't lol I've seen people post about the FQ bingo (You "pay" a FQ to play and then the winner gets the FQ's "paid" in)
The one time I went there was a table set up for a block of the month. The first month of it the pattern is free and the next month if you bring in the completed block the next month is free, if you don't then it cost (I think it was 1.50 or 2.00)
I'm sure the ladies on here will have some origional and wonderful ideas! They will probably be much more help than me

On Mondays, the quilt board sends out Quilted email which is seperate from this. It has a newsletter that I find helpful in a learning situation like a Quilt Guild. Sorry I don't know how to get there from here.

at our guild, some talented ladies were recruited to give 5-10 min. demonstrations of skills/techniques. the members circled from table to table in small groups to watch and learn. handouts and small projects baggies were handed out

Our Guild is large 80+ members. We have demos, super sews, Sew a thons (we are making quilts for charity). We have a group of ladies called Cuddle Quilters who make quilts for our local Hospice. A celebrity quilter is visiting our Guild and will be doing 2 classes for our guild. We also have Bonnie Hinter visiting in the Fall of 2014.

One of my favorite things was a fabric exchange. Each person brought up to 5 pieces of fabric, any size. All fabrics were laid out on tables. We drew numbers and got in line accordingly. The line passed by the tables 5 times. Each time through you could choose 1 fabric for yourself. You could go through the line as many times as you had fabric pieces donated. So most people went through all 5 times, but those who only brought 2 or 3 pieces had to drop out. It was great fun and didn't cost a thing except the opportunity to get rid of unwanted fabrics from our stashes.

I know I may be in the minority, but there are 2 things that keep me going to guild - #1 show and tell and #2 visiting with the other guild members. It is great when we have a genuine speaker or activity, but I would rather not have an activity that was just made up "so we would have something to do". Why not ask the other guild members whether they really want to play quilt games (I do not enjoy those, but some people do), or whether they would rather just visit, ooh and aah over the show and tell, and have time to ask "how did you do that?" My only real complaint about either of my guild meetings is that our time to talk to each other is so limited.

I'm not in a quilt group. However, one suggestion I'd make is to go to the library, dig thru the hundred books and find a few with quilting ideas. I borrowed a book once that showed several blocks finished off different ways and with different colors. Quite interesting. You can make bunches of quilts from one single block--------if you vary the setting +/or the color.

I belong to a large guild which meets monthly and we have many activities...a speaker or demonstration of some type, charm square exchange, block of the month, a yearly challenge, show & tell, etc.

And I also belong to a small bee. We had 8 members but are now down to 6, and also meet monthly. We've done block exchanges and row robins, plus we celebrate birthdays and have a Christmas party/cookie exchange. Once we did a fabric dump where each person brought a bag full of unwanted fabric, we dumped it all on the table, and then everyone filled their bag back up with stuff from the pile. Lately we've been making charity lap quilts with donated fabrics and leftover batting. We meet at one member's home and set up an assembly line with some sewing, some pressing, and some squaring up blocks. We usually make quilt-as-you-go string blocks, which are fast and easy. The six of us can put together a lap quilt in just a couple of hours. It's great fun, we use up scraps and leftovers, and help the community with our donations.

I belong to an 80+ member guild and currently we have community service projects (a quilt for a local museum that will be worked on jointly by members; small quilts for Child Protective Services; a "house" themed quilt for the local Habitat for Humanity branch to raffle as a fundraiser). Many of our monthly programs have a small fee for materials, but some are free. We recently had a paper piecing class; today it was machine applique. In January we had a "garage sale" for sewing items (lots of fun). Next month our president is leading a hands-on project based on "The Foldy Stuff" patterns which are fast and fun (just Google it); we're planning a one soon on the 10 Minute Block technique.
