What to charge??
I have a friend that has ask me to make a T-shirt quilt for her daughter and soon to be son-in-law. She insists on paying me but I have NO IDEA what to charge??? Any ideas on the subject?? Thanks so much!! Lisa

Is she providing the t-shirts or are you? Many people triple the material cost. Try searching on here for some ideas on charging, I know there are several threads. I've never made a t-shirt quilt so not sure of the time and work involved. Good luck!

Most people use an iron on interfacing on the back of the T-shirt front before cutting the squares. You might want to price out enough for the quilt, it can add up. Are you going to need fabric for sashing? How about quilt batt and backing/binding? Do you want to throw in your labour or free or do you want a little for your trouble? Give her the estimate of the cost and see if she still wants to proceed. Most non-sewers have no idea about what fabric costs.

Thank you all for your replies and ideas. My friend had the kids pick out their shirts. We are going shopping tomorrow to buy the batting, interfacing and the rest of the fabric we will need for the sashings, backings, etc..so she will purchase those herself. I will be doing the prep work, sewing and finishing. Much thanks. Lisa

Thank you so much for this link...that is a beautiful quilt!! Well worth every penny of the $1100 fee!! (if it shouldn't have been more) Mine won't be nearly that detailed. She has 15 shirts...probably will be just the typical stitch in the ditch. I do want to keep track of my hours..if for nothing else just to see how many hours it takes. Thanks to all for your replies.

Most quilters over price their quilts in my opinion. I have made over 100 quilts, sold one and have given many away. I do it for my love of quilting. Taxes and all that stuff is more aggravation than I need. Good luck.

I've made and sold 3 t-shirt quilts so far and will be making one for my school's band to sell at auction next month. When I was first approached about making a t-shirt quilt I googled several websites and looked at what they charge vs what you get. A cheap t-shirt quilt involves cutting out 12.5" squares of each shirt regardless of the design size and stitching these blocks together for a quilt. Most of these quilts sold for around $13-$14 per shirt. Since I add sashing and do quite a bit more for my quilts I charge $16 per shirt. An average quilt takes 20 shirts and I charge $320 for the quilt. I also make a pillow case in coordinating fabric to either use along with the quilt, or use it as a bag to store the quilt.
