It is a wonderful idea. It will mean the world to her and will bring her comfort every day. Stay in touch as much as you can, it will help her so much!

She of all people will understand that act of love. I recommend you make the quilt, and send it along with a letter and some photos (if you have any) to remind her of how much she means to you. We'll be praying for her.
