It does depend upon the type quilting you do. Most of my yardage is 1/2 yrds. I do art quilts. Some peoplelide to coordinated fabric quilts at least lap size. These take ~4 yrds, twin ~5 yds for the top. Also depends upon the size of the design and if you'll use large pieces of it and also a border. When I first started quilting, I didn't have a clue what my ultimate "voice" would be so I bought things that don't fit my current "voice". As some people have said, they don't buy for stash. They buy for projects and the leftovers contribute to the stash. You don't need to be in any hurry to collect fabric or a lot of beginner projects.

I bought a layer cake of Audra's Iris Garden when it first came out. You're right about the purple. Great color. I have yet to make anything with it as I have several quilts to finish first. But I'm slowly pulling fabs from my stash and buying coordinating fabs for it. So far I have pulled another purple from my stash from Together by Brannock and Patel by Moda which is similar in color and design and bought a gold that coordinated with the gold. I'm hoping to find a great green to coordinate, too. Can't wait to start the quilt.

Oh, my favorite subject!! I usually buy a fat quarter bundle for around $129 and a jelly roll and then a couple of yards of my two favorite fabrics from the collection for sashing and borders. I then stash it for later. I have so many of these on my shelves and am so happy that I bought the collection. I wish I could have bought enough fabric for backing, but, oh well. I am so delighted I bought the collections!!!

If I see it and love it... It is in my stash. If I never get it made, I get to look at it and pet it everyday. lol

Last spring I found a whole collection on sale - I purchased 3 yards of each dark, 5 yards of each light and some I purchased 9 yards for backing. I was lucky to get about 85 yards of fabric for only $200.00. I'm now working on the third fabric using just that collection. Will be able to make 4 -5 more using those colors.
