I usually use muslin but have used sheets, and have also used scrappy large blocks or pieced the backing. It's whatever suits you.

I have used bed sheets, flannel, fleece, broadcloth, muslin and regular 100% cotton fabric.
I use what suits the purpose of the quilt.

I usually go to my LQS & buy the 108" wide fabric they sell for quilt backs. They come in several colors & patterns. I can always find something that matches just perfectly. Hope this is of help to you.

Like everyone else here I have used just about averything and anything. I just completed a quilt this past weekend and I used extra thick fleese as the backing for added warmth. I have a topper on the frame now that I purchsed in a sale and it had a lot of rough spots and I knew I would never be able to sell it, so I am using it to practive using the pattern perfect templates and I am just using a sheet as the backing on it.

I have also for batting used old fleese blankets that no one in the house wanted anymore, I just use a lint shaver and get all the fuzzies off them and sandwich them right on in there. So the old blanke gets a second life that way.

Use whatever you are comfortable with.

I use fabric that compliments the top. I will piece it with fabrics from the top or I will find something that goes with the binding that I use.

I prefer to use quilt fabric on the back as well as the front, by that I mean, not sheets, as I do hand quilting. Sheets are usually woven tighter than good quilt fabric, so it is more difficult to hand quilt. I also like the color and interest a good fabric will give me for the back of the quilt. You get two for one if you can flip the quilt over sometimes. :lol:

Quilting fabric, fleece, minkee, and flannel all work great.
Flannel sheets work ok, too.

I have done enough charity quilts using recycled sheets that we have now banned them. The thread counts are so high, that the needle breaks the threads instead of sliding in between the weave. The quilting leaves little holes allover the back. Even thought they are used for charity quilts, we (the guild that makes them) still like them to look nice.

I have also seen problems with *some* batiks as backs. The weave on *some* is also just like percale sheets- so tight that the threads are broken.

Sewbatik.com has the 108" wide batik backs. This fabric is made for quilters, and is very, very nice! Their flannel is the normal 40" wide, is the most luxurious flannel I've ever felt.

I use good cotton quilting fabrics and piece the back. I like to compliment what is on the front of the quilt. I don't like using muslin, or sheets. I have only used the 108" wide stuff once, it worked great, just doesn't come in very many patterns. Most of my backs are fabrics that I have bought on clearance for really good prices and I buy ahead of time alot, as I tend to use many of the same color families.
