Where I grew up that word meant cheap, worthless, so I can't see any connection to using it in reference to a quilt. I had never seen it used this way until I saw this thread. As for me, it is a non-word. I will never use it here, I promise.

Interesting--I've always heard it used by much older quilters and in historical references as a descriptor for non quilted tops--lacking the bat and backing leaves them "flimsy" and unfinished. I don't think it is meant to be derogatory used with quilting, or with some other references either (some things are meant to be flimsy or flexible).

Yes but you have just used the word in the correct context... as an adjective. It is not a noun, as in "a flimsy". A flimsy what?

I agree. I just call a quilt top a quilt top which is an unfinished quilt.

This sounds much like the use of the word 'wadding' instead of batting.

There is also context to consider. If I were at my mechanics, and the word flimsy came up, I would ask flimsy what?
In the context of this board and what we do here, flimsy should be at least, known and understood, I would think, imho. Language is a living changing thing, and always being created. How wonderful.
peace

I don't like the term either. Sounds cheap.
