Instead of randomly cutting fabric, you cut out blocks around certain features of the fabric, being "fussy" over which ones you use. Like picking out a cats face, or a certain flower, or a butter fly, to be the focus of that block.

the EASIEST way to fussy cut, is to use the squares with the centers cut out. they are put out by June Taylor. I have the 12 1/2 outer with a 6 1/2 center square, a 8 1/2 outer with a 4 1/2 inner square and the 6/12 outer with 3 1/2 inner square. be sure to put on the sand paper dots on the back because you DO NOT want them to slip. you lay the ruler over your novelity fabric and find the design you want to use, then simply cut around the inside square. I bought mine at one of the big box stores with a coupon but have also seen them at Wally World.

Some people make a template to "audition" the part of the fabric that shows in the fussy cut. I generally just eyeball it - cut oversize and trim to suit my needs. The fabric looks like chunky swiss cheese at the end.

One important thing to remember: ALWAYS buy extra fabric because fussy cutting uses up more.

Looks like chunky swiss cheese!!!! :lol: :lol: If that's not an understatement!!!! You should see fabric from a watercolor that I did. Amazing.

Fussy Cutting is when you choose large items in a pattern--flowers, stars, ect, and cut around them far enough out that they can be appliqued onto a border, a quilt, ect,. It is fun to do and it makes an interesting picture.
