Default Mug Rug Swap

I recently joined a mug rug swap and they have to be round. Do you have any suggestions? I have to make 4 different ones of 4 different patters. The only requirement is that they have to be round and 9". I was thinking of a string block, crazy quilt block, making them 10" and sizing them down to 9" with something round. Have any better suggestions. Are any of you going to do this. It was posted last week and it looked like there was a lot of interest at that time. Just sounds like fun to me. I have to get mine going because I am having Rorator Cuff surgery April 4th. I don't know what the deadline for sending them in but I would like to get them done. I have been told my arm will be in a sling for 4 to 6 weeks and that it is very painful so wish me luck. I told the Dr. that the pain was somewhere between child birth and kidney stones and his nurse frowned and said oh my gosh.

There's lots of star/starburst patterns that would be perfect to be centred into your circle.

You coudl look for spider web patterns for your circle.

Also, you could fussy cut most anything and build out from there for your circle.

Another idea ... how about hexagons/octagons, either left as is, or rounded out?

My first thoughts were of making them look like saucers. You could use either floral fabric or applique. I just figured since they are for under cups and they are round; saucers.

I too joined this swap and am excited to do something out of the box for me ... that would be anything other than 4P or 9P ... then add borders and trim to 9" circle. Binding should be easy. Four different patterns is great. If they don't come out perfect, nobody will be the wiser because matching is not required. And I can use scraps from my stash ... oh boy!

How about doing a crazy patch with a focus fabric near the center, then cut into a round?

Also the folded star potholder pattern? There's free instructions somewhere on the web. Have Fun!

I'm in the mug rug swap too. I think it's a minimum of 9". I was planning on using my dinner plate (10 1/4") and just quick turning them and whatever size it turns out that's it. Haven't come up with any ideas yet either. I think it would be easier if they were a matching set. I was thinking of appliqueing a bird house on one, the rest????
