What was I thinking?
#1
Months ago, I bought fabric for a quilt out of McCall's Quick Quilt titled Little Rocketeer. I know I remember thinking, that's all the fabric I need for this quilt. Now that I am getting around to working on it, I can't figure out what I was thinking.
The pattern calls for "5 yards for backing (piece lengthwise)." I purchased two cuts... the first for 1 yd. and the second for 2 yds. for a total of 3 yds. The finished quilt size is 69.5" x 78.5". I very clearly remember thinking that I was going to cut the backing differently than the pattern called for to save money and fabric. I can't remember how I was thinking to cut it... do you know? Or did I just screw up?
Thanks.

The only thing I can think of is maybe you were planning to use the 2 yard cut like a center panel of your back then build it out with borders but 1 yard wouldn't be enough for what you would need to build out to the needed size given the top's measurements. In my experience most fabric requirements given for a quilt exceed what is actually needed. Maybe you were thinking you could use some of the leftovers in your back or maybe you had something in your stash in mind to make up the difference? Is it possible you bought excess of one of the top fabrics with just this purpose in mind?

Using the formula provided I figured a back a few inches larger than the top at 72 x 80 and it ended up calling for over 6 yards. The pattern only called for 5. This method is supposed to use less?? Did I do something wrong?
