    what quilt style to pick

Hello..................Is there a rule of thumb when picking out a quilting style. My quilt is a series of squares and rectangles, not bigger than the spread of your hand. I only know how to SITD but am learning other styles using sandwiches. There are no blocks. I designed it as I went along. I want to add something after I SITD to give it a more quilted look. Some of the fabric is more busy than the others so I know that not all the stitches will show the same. I will keep learning until I feel confidant enough to go that extra step. Opinions on something simple will be great.

I have always heard that if the quilt top is predominately straight lines to quilt into some curves and vice versa. If your machine has decorative stitches, these can be useful as well.

Thanks for the input lfletcher...........can I bind the quilt after I SITD before deciding on more quilting?

If you have your quilt quilted with the SITD you can bind and then go back to fill in later. That is if you have quilted all the way to the edge. Your fabric should shift any after you have the initial stitching done. If you have a very busy fabric, you will not see much of the quilting so don't get elaborate on that part. But, you do want to be consistent with the amount of quilting through out the quilt.

The Internet is a great resource. Take a look on youtube at the video tutorials from Jenny Doan at the Missouri Star Quilt co. for some great ideas. There is nothing wrong with designing as you go along for a free form style quilt.

I like to cross hatch especially with squares. A photo always help us give advice. Sometimes the quilt top tells me how it wants to be quilted.
