I have two baby bed quilts to make. What dimensions do you usually use? Also, what dimensions do you make your little flannel blankets....the ones that we used to call (in the dark ages) 'receiving blankets.' Thanks.

One of my quilting books says a standard crib mattress is 28"x52" And a crib quilt size is 50"x53". But I have baby quilt patterns in lots of different sizes: 45"x55", 38" square, etc. I don't think there is any one size-just make it to fit your planned design.

I've done both small and large for baby quilts. Not sure about a baby 'bed' quilt. Just stitching down the binding on one now and it's large - about 50 x 60. Didn't really think about the size when I saw the (free online) pattern...just liked it when I saw it. The baby will grow into it, right? I've also done much smaller - 25/30 x 40/45?

No help with receiving blanket size but perhaps if you do an internet search on that term, or look at babysrus.com for them you'll get a general idea of size for those.

I use a 36 inch square for the receiving blankets I make. I do round the corners so I can crochet around the edges. In fact I finished up the last of my flannel fabric -- I have about 50 receiving blankets crocheted for my grandkids. They will get blankets when they start having babies. When I make a baby blanket I usually make them 45 inches square. They are intended to drag around rather than be on the bed.

Receiving blankets vary in size when you buy them. So if I were making some, I'd jsut use a square of flannel. 42" wide?? 42" long!

I always made the receiving blankets a 45" square. Then did a double narrow hem all around.

Just measured some of my grandsons receiving blankets and most were 36" square.

Dark ages??? Hey! That's what I called them!

Of course these days they tell new mothers not to put any blankets in the bed with the baby anyway, so I suspect the baby quilts are mostly used in strollers or on the floor, and that's fine too.
And back in the dark ages, I preferred larger receiving blankets, about 45 inches square.

I think a square about 40 inches is the best size for a receiving blanket. I like the self binding receiving blankets but now it seems flannel width is getting smaller sometimes only 40 inches once the selvedge is cut off so they end up a bit smaller. For a baby quilt I like to make it at least 40-45 inches or more, either square or rectangle, so it can be used as a floor/play quilt now and as a drag around quilt when the child gets bigger. No blankets or quilts should be used as a cover in the crib for safety reasons.
