I would make it 70-72" long---plenty to tuck in around the feet, etc.

Does he have a blanket or anything else that he has used previous that you could get an idea for size??

I'm with you on the 55-56X70-72. It depends on what the size of the blocks dictates for the exact measurement. 70 inches is plenty long enough. He's 66 inches tall, but no one covers their head, I hope.

I have been wondering the same thing. My DH wasn't feeling good the other night and went out to sit on his recliner so as not to disturb me. He picked up the lap quilt I usually use in the evenings and said I needed to make a longer one. I'll have to go check the dimensions on that one.

This is such a thoughtful post which brings back memories for me. My husband and I were reorganizing our den yesterday after taking down the Christmas tree. As he folded up the quilt that I made for him during chemo treatments (woodworking theme) we took a moment to share how we felt at that time and how much better he is now, thanks to prayers from many. It's been three years and he is doing well. I pray that your husband finds warmth for his body and in his heart from your quilt, too, and that his health improves.

I like yardage of fleece for recliner use. Best size is width of fabric (is that about 54"?) and 2 yards (72") gives enough to tuck under my feet but still able to move around a bit without getting uncovered. That's my recommendation for a good recliner size cover.

Lay his chair back and measure it, head to toe, side to side, add a few inches for that "tuck" factor.

Measure him, measure the panel and add enough to make it larg enough to cover his body.

Just a thought on keeping him warm. My DH takes Coumadin so is also really cold, so I have added foot pockets to the back of even his purchased lap blankets. I just cut a piece of fabric 30" X 50", fold it in half, right sides together, stitch around the edges leaving an opening for turning, turn it out and stitch it on by machine being sure the open edge is caught in a seam. For quilts, I put the foot pocket on by hand after quilting, but I make it the width of the lap quilt, folded in half, and attached at the same time as the binding.

to extend it, why not do the 4 patch in yellow and black and alternate them with a fussy cut tractor. Then finish with the same size little borders of the black/yellow/white (reversed) on the outside. If you made this border 6" and the colored border same size as other (i assume they are 1"-2" wide) you will increase the size by about 18". This should be plenty big for him to snuggle under.
