I also think #10 would be a little thick unless you are really emphasizing the applique and like someone already said, it's limited in colors. I've seen some other floss/thread that's thicker than the floss but thinner than #10 and it comes in many colors. Usually comes in packs of different colors but it will still be among the embroidery floss and crochet cottons.

Unless you're aiming for a homespun look, I'd use perle cotton embroidery thread. It's much heavier than regular floss, but is twisted and has a nice sheen. It's what I use to blanket stitch my labels on my quilts.
