I am getting ready to start ( yes I know .. I know.... I shouldn't but I am ) another quilt top that will have applique- the person in charge said to get size10 DMC floss for the hand stitching. I went to Joanns and Hancocks and none that I saw are labeled as size 10- they had 5, 8 and 12 on a rack and then of course the HUGE displays of the multi strand - so is the multi strand size 10 or am I missing something here ?

I don't think the multi-strand is size 10. I thought I had some to compare from 100 years ago but I can't find it. I may be wrong but I think #10 is bedspread cotton. I'm going to watch this thread to see what the experts say. I did see someone's post on another site that said to put 3-4 strands of regular floss together to equal #10 but that was a tatting site...

I have only seen it(the small balls) in those sizes too. I think virtualbernie is right, size 10 is actually crochet cotton on the larger balls. i use floss to tie but not for hand stitching

JoAnn's sells crochet cotton in size 10. DMC is a brand name and DMC Cebelia crochet cotton comes in sizes 10-20-30. I use #30 for making lace. WalMart also carries a size 10, but not in the DMC brand. Hope this helps you a little bit.

WOW Thanks so much never thought to look at the crochet cotton and I walked all around that area in both stores - ok so what needle would I use to sew this with ?

Size 10 crochet cotton (DMC) is the 'standard' size of this type of 'yarn'. The number is the diameter of the thread. The lower the number the 'thinner' the thread (I had to check my supply to see if I remembered this right, I always forget which way it goes). Hand embroidery thread is not crochet cotton. When I use size 10 I use a tapestry needle with a bigger eye, but you can use what ever needle that you have that the thread fits through the needle eye.

For me the size 10 for applique is a little thick. I always use 2 threads of the hand embroidery thread or the lighter weight crochet cotton. It is also know as 'tatting' cotton.

A size 10 crochet cotton might be okay for blanket stitch applique, but for needle-turn applique it would be way to thick. You could also use it for 'big-stitch' hand quilting. It does give a look of 'primitive'.

oopppssss sorry should have stated that it is for the Blanket stitch part of it - and we are suppose to do it by hand. So you think the #10 Crochet cotton will be ok ?

Sorry, I haven't been to the board for a few days. I think #10 crochet cotton would be okay for the blanket stitch. Still heavier than 2 or 3 strands of embroidery floss and usually very limited in colours. Embroidery floss comes in over 400 colours. The crochet cotton is also a little stiffer.
