If you're going for the modern look, I'd use the soft background color for the sashing. Otherwise I like that green you used in some of the blocks. Very nice quilt so far.

I vote for the yellow back ground fabric, and the narrower sashing.

I always lay fabrics next to my blocks - or even spread out the sashing fabric and place the blocks on top of it to see how it works together - I am not good at just looking at it without trying out fabrics. I think you did a wonderful job and I have that sampler on my list too.

If you do the qal you should know the finished block is 16". I think the block size is part of why I am struggling too finish at a size I like.

I would also try the yellow for the sashing, smaller than 5". Maybe add a solid block in your other block colors to join the sashing pieces.

My thought is to use the light-solid color as the sashing but have the sashing just 2-3 inches wide. If you need the quilt bigger, add a border or two of the darker colors you like.

I'm a bit picky about coordinating sizes as well as colors. I'd go for a 4" sashing and an 8" outer border. Can you miniaturize any of your blocks? I think a 4" pale yellow sashing with cornerstones in smaller versions of your blocks would look fantastic. JMHO

I like the boo-boo. It adds fun. And I would go 3" or less sashing. A wider sashing on a sampler quilt is probably a good thing. As for color, I'd probably go all white or black with pale yellow cornerstones. But I can't see your colors so maybe a blue would work better than black.

I did a quilt on the same like as yours with a layer cake and used 2 1/2" sashings of my background color. Used a contrasting color for my sashing squares, it made a nice sized quilt. A 5" sashing might take away from all your nice work done on the blocks as it would leave a lot of space between. JMHO
