    Default Stitch length?

Just curious - what stitch length do you use for piecing? On my old Kenmore, I used to use 10-12 stitches per inch. On my computerized Kenmore, it always starts up at 2.2, but I change it to 3.0. Is there a "recommended" stitch length for piecing? For stitching in the ditch? Thanks!

I make all my quilts on my Featherweight & I use a fairly short stitch length... 15 stitches per inch usually. I don't think there's a "standard" per se. Just what you feel comfortable with (tho I suppose stitches could be too loose & things could pull apart or be too tight & pucker).

depends on what type of piecing I am doing. for normal piecing, I am usually around a 2.4 on a Bernina, for paper piecing I shorten the stitch considerably, and for long strip piecing I lengthen the stitch. for long arm quilting, that depends also on what type of design look I want, but that usually ranges between 9 and 11.

Usually 2.5 and 12 stitches per inch on manual setting machines. My vintage Singers has a 30 stitch per inch setting. What type of sewing was that setting used for?

Long enough to get the seam ripper point into easily/short enough to hold things together washing after washing.
On my Bernie 1031 and vintage Bernie 830 that's between 2.5 and 3 on the manual dial.

I typically use 2.5 ... sometimes 2.0. I did go smaller just once and had to take some stitches out... oh my ... what a pain.

    Regular piecing ... 1.8
Shorter stitches give tighter seams. So you have less shift. And then when you press you get nice crisp seams.

    Paper Piecing ... 1.0
