    Default Microwave Bowl holder warning!

I was planning on giving these as extra gifts this Christmas. I bought warm and natural to use as the batting, thinking it was 100% cotton. I made one up and decided to test it in my microwave. After 1 1/2 minutes the corners started smoking and almost caught on fire. I did use 100% cotton fabric and thread.
Wondering how many buy these at craft shows that are made by unsuspecting crafters. Back to the drawing board in search of the correct batting. Just glad I didn't make them all up!

Warm and natural batting has some poly in it in the form of scrim.Check with your LQS to see if they carry a batting that is really 100% cotton. There is on but I do not remember the name. Good luck!!!!!

here is a link to 100% cotton to be used in the microwave http://www.thequiltingcupboard.com/s...r-x2377543.htm
one must be careful with any fabric in the microwave... too long will burn anything!

Warm Tater has been replaced by the link above by the Warm Company, per the article in the link

I always believed that the microwave bowl holders were not for use in the microwave, but to hold the hot bowl after. And that's what I've always told people I've given them to. If they are a gift I usually pin a little paper with those instructions on it to the bowl holders.

you also have to be careful of spilled food on them. the food from a prior use can easily catch fire. That is why I don't make them I will not set up someone else's home, possibly children, for a disaster.

If you have put soup in them, the soup has fat content. that may not be noticeable when the next person goes to use it.

you could use them to carry the bowl when it comes out of the microwave.

Sounds like the same warnings we were hearing about the potato bags a few years back. Don't think I'll be making any. I just use hot pads or oven mitts to take bowls out of the microwave.

i use Hobbs Craft Batt, it says 100 percent cotton or if I can't find that I use Wrap-n-Zap from Joan's.. You have to be careful of your fabric also. I did some checking and was told that even tho it says 100 Percent there is still some poly.

Although I've never made them I always felt the same. I treat them like potholders.
