You could try a disp. 16 patch as well or even 4 patches works well.

I am also not really crazy about cutting them into fourths so that I have to sew 2.5 inch squares together. I have lovely books that I can make my jelly row strips or fat quarters into quilts, but I think there aren't really good books for 5" squares. Please tell me I am wrong !! Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I call this quilt Disappearing Origins. It's D9P from a couple of Moda Charm Packs called Origins.
I put darker square in the middle.

I just love this quilt. Looks so warm and cozy.

I bought the book Minnesota Charms 2 and have really enjoyed making several of the quilts in there; especially Hugo's cabin!

Very informative discussion. I have 72 5" squares I need to use and appreciate all the good suggestions.

I like to sew scraps into wonky designs and cut into 5" squares and than take solid colors and cut into 5" squares and alternate them to make each block and reverse the process for every other block.
