I gave a lap quilt to my mother-in-law a few years ago and one thing they told me is they get washed along with all the other laundry - hot water and strong detergent. My mother-in-law just put it over the back of a chair as she didn't want it ruined. I got it back when she went into hospice.

Our group made about 50 of these lap quilts and ours were rounded at the bottom so they don't get caught in the wheel chair. We also used flannel backs to they don't slip to the floor as easily. Also the pocket is great for their glasses etc. God Bless you for doing this for others. I am so sure they will be so appreciated

I am not sure you want them wider, but a bit longer would be nice. 30"is wide enough to tuck in without being cumbersome, but a bit longer would allow for leg coverage and tuck in room at top (again, without being cumbersome with wheels and foot holds). I might do 30" x 40" or 45".
