I was thinking that fleece as backing would be a little too thick to machine quilt on my dsm if I added a layer of batting.

But I'm not sure it will still have the quilty feel if I don't use batting.

What have you done? What do you think? I picked up several yards a few years ago on a JoAnn's black friday sale.

I make a lot of quilts for children and they do like the fleece backings when they pick their quilts.

Maybe others do, but I do not use additional batting when I am using fleece for the backing. You are going to have enough "control" issues without that additional layer of smart-a** getting in the way. :-)

I never have, either. IT's thick enough and will still feel like a quilt.

I think it would be too thick. The fleece alone makes a nice backing to a quilt top.

I've done both (using a thin batting). But I've found just using the fleece usually is enough.

I've done several fleece backed baby quilts but did not use batting. The fleece is enough by itself especially if you do a flannel top.

I don't add batting due to the warmth that is already created with the fleece.

it's a personal choice- fleece backing is plenty warm enough and (lofty) enough with out batting- some people like really heavy quilts- they use batting in theirs.
