I thought the liberated churn dash quilt was kind of interesting. I did spend a few minutes trying to figure out the "main cuts" for it -

It is not a warm and fuzzy looking design, though. Especially in the blues.

Hens an Chickens is a Churn Dash variation that might interest those looking for something traditional but with the uneven bars.

Churn Dash is an easy pattern to manipulate.

Floating Churn Dash and Hole in the Barn Door (also know as Churn Dash Frame) can be found on Quilters Cache. One of these might be what you are looking for.

Churn Dash is my all time favorite block. I had 'Dave Snow' make me a barn quilt to go on my house and I used the Churn Dash block. It is so lovely. The gal who owned my favorite quilt shop said it was her favorite block, also, so I had 'Dave Snow' make a barn quilt for her, too. There's something about it. It can be scrappy, traditional, wonky, modern, etc. and I love them all. The one that bothers Jan so much, is something else, all right, but if you took just one of any of the blocks and made a quilt with it, I think even Jan would appreciate it. It is too busy for me as well.

I agree the Churn Dash is an all-time classic. Not sure if this is what you're looking for but I think they're really cool:

Liberated, Wonky, Funky, Nested, but how about Disappearing? I made a churn dash, cut into quarters, and used them in another 9-Patch. Then you can disappear that, too. I liked the one I cut into fourths and turned the opposite quarters around. That one was cute.

Weird how much I do not like that one.

It does have very hard edges and looks all prickly and hurty to me. I love the churn & dash pattern, just not this variation.
peace

LOL Dunster thats how my blocks of just about everything I try looks like instead of the correct way, so I guess in a sense you could say I modernize about every block I make.

Liberated Churn Dash is not for me, I agree with Jan that it just looks "wrong." My first quilt was a king done using the Churn Dash block and ever since I stay away from that block with a passion.
