It is going to depend on a number of things. How large do you want the finished quilt to be? How wide do you want the sashings? Are you going to have cornerstones in your sashing strips? Maybe it would help to draw it out on graph paper.

Not thinking cornerstones; sounds complicated.
Can't graph it as I have a brain injury.

What size do you want the finished baby quilt to be? What size are you thinking of for the sashing, 2" (finished)? Are you also planning on boarders?
With the 9 blocks, I would assume that you will lay it out 3x3 (3 across and 3 down). So far that makes it 18 (unfinished).
More information would help. Plus if you have pictures of you applique blocks would be nice.

I don't think the way others do.
forgot to say there would also be 9-solid blocks.
can cut strips from accuquilt strip cutter 2''/3''' or 4''
then I would have to do the borders.
thinking sashing...2''
borders...4''
does that make much sense ?

Okay I did some figuring  :?
If you layed out your blocks 4x4, you will only be using 8 appliques, the last one you could use on the back.
For sashing around all (including top, bottom and sides), using 2" cut (1.5 finished) you would need 1/2 yard, hopefully with leftovers.
Now if all my math is correct you should have a quilt that is approx 29" square. After adding a 4" boarder your quilt will be about 36" square
I had to a picture to help me 'picture' it. ;)
