Speaking of labels. I want to do my first one for my co-workers baby. I thought about putting Her name, birthdate, and weight on it. I have already quilted mine too. I also don't have an embrodery machine I know that would be nicer. So what pen do you use and since I don't have any more of either of the fabrics what do you suggest? Are there premade labels for what I want to put? Also I was thinking of saying something like: made for ........and the info I mentioned above. Now with it being for my co-workers (my co-worker is a male friend)daughter would I also put from (my name)? Or what would you put? Sorry I have so much to write about this topic.

There are labels you can buy, by the panel at some quilt stores. Or you can use a piece of light colored fabric left from the quilt, or you could use a left over block. I press my label to shiney side of freezer paper. It makes writing easier. I use a fabric pen. Press again to set the ink. Fold in all the raw edges and sew on the quilt. I ususally write the name of the quilt, who it's for, date, my name, and city and state if there is room.

Mine go on the lower right corner, with my name, city, State and date on the back. I always write a book with my quilts that I give as gifts so the recipient knows (years down the road) what was going on, what the headlines were, what the Twins or Vikings were doing and sayings, adages, little stories and jokes. I tried to put a little of each on each page I did. Each page was a block. So if I had 35 blocks, I would tell about it, what was in it, what it meant, what the name of the block was, etc. It is appreciated, it is provenance and it is a nice way to end a day of quilting, while it is still fresh in your mind.

I just had some bad news (not really bad, but not exactly planned. I made a little sampler quilt for our son's friend who was going to have a baby (he and his wife). The center block was called Poinsettia and it was because the baby was going to be born in December. She was born last week - with a heart problem and with Down Syndrome. I don't know if I should give it to them or if I should make a new one with bright colors or what I should do! I wrote a book for that too and right now I don't think I could give it. I wrote of all the things the baby could do with (at this point I didn't know the sex of the child - their choice) her parents, and I just don't know if it would fit in.

I keep thinking to myself - a baby, regardless, just wants warmth and a Poinsettia block in the center doesn't mean anything. I put the signature on the bottom right corner.

When I did the embroidered quilt, the "signature block" would always be bottom right, with something embroidered on it and my name, city and state and date on it.

I think where you feel the most comfortable putting it is the right place. Edie

I've read that you should always put a label on a quilt. It should have at the very least: your name, date it was finished,your city and state and the name of the quilt. If you also want to include who it's for or anything else, that's fine too. I press a piece of muslin to the shiny side of a piece of freezer paper. This makes writing on the fabric very easy. If you draw lines on the other side of the freezer paper first with a permanent marker, you'll be able to see thru, if you hold both up to a window in the daylight. Place the paper-backed fabric on the glass and make your label. You can write/print your words on straight lines. Peel the freezer paper off after you're done. I use a fabric pen, set the ink by ironing. If you have no fabric left from the quilt top, then you can just turn the edges under and hand stitch in place or use some other fabric that's similar or maybe a solid that picks up a color in the quilt for a border around your label. Hand sew it on and you're done.

usually people will look at a hanging quilt for a label by turning the lower left corner over. so i put my labels on the bottom right of the back (while looking at that side). no rules though.

I tend to put mine on the lower right on the back. I don't think there is any "right" or "wrong" place to put the label.

My grand daughter has a facination with labels so for the quilt I recently made her I included serveral and placed them along each edge. Each label was different and included information about the quilt's name, maker, who it was for and when it was completed. One had a message. . . "Grandma loves you."

I've also seen the label included in the center of a block that's pieced into the backing. I think you can do just about anything with your label. It's another way to get creative with your quilting.

I read somewhere - "My Quilt - My Rules". As long as we get the label on, it doesn't really matter.

This is becoming a habit with a lot of quilters. The reason is because stealing quilts, especially those that are mailed, has become very profitable. If you add the label and then quilt, it becomes pretty impossible to remove the label without messing up the stitches and ruining the quilting. Most thieves won't want to mess with that. It's sad that there are people out there who would steal like this. :thumbdown:

It really depends on the quilt and the label as to where I put it. I usually add it to the right side on the back, but I've used both corners and on my latest quilt it is toward the middle. It just depends on the quilt and my mood as to where it gets placed. :wink:

Months ago I asked how to machine sew a label on since I must keep hand sewing to a minimum. Klue said that if it's a wallhanging, to sew it onto the rod sleeve while making that. It works great and looks best when I centered on the sleeve. Whenever it's not a wallhanging, I vary where I put it depending on how it will be used.
