Default My iron died :'(

Last July I purchased what I thought was a great iron... It worked great - until it stopped the other day. I had been ironing in the morning and then the iron went to sleep... and it never woke up again.

It's a Black and Decker - and no, I don't want to buy a Rowenta or an Olisimo - and is under warranty... So I called the company and sure they'll replace it... after I cut off the end of the cord (to make it unusable) and send them a check for $7.50 to cover the cost of shipping. I've never had to pay for a warranty replacement before although I've rarely needed something replaced from other companies but this really caught me offguard... and it will take about 3 weeks for it to arrive.

I have another iron, an older $10 B&D which I'll be using until my new one arrives. I need to cut the cord off and send in my check maybe today. I'm so glad I have a scale at home that I can use to weigh it so I don't have to make a trip to the post office...

Has anyone else ever had to pay for a warranty replacement before? I just was surprised by it. I don't blame the company for doing it. I'm sure it cuts down on false warranty requests. I understand the cutting of the cord part as well.

Hubby said to buy it at Walmart again and return the broken one so that they'll send it in to B&D without a charge but I can't bring myself to do that. It was bought 11 months ago, not within the past 90 days.

I looked online and I coudln't find another iron that had as good of reviews as the one I bought so I think I'll definitely cough up the cash to send in my cord and cover the cost of shipping the replacement.

If you read the fine print on warranties on a lot of small appliances you need to cover shipping. Sad but true.

Makes you mad to have to pay for shipping, especially to and from - but the cost of shipping is getting so high, I suppose to keep prices down, oh well. Is the cost of shipping more than the cost of a new iron?

Now is your chance to find one of the irons without the steam feature, from what I can see they are not expensive, they look like they would do a good job.

The iron cost $25 new so the shipping is cheaper....
I did consider looking for one that didn't have the auto off feature but I actually like having it. I have forgotten to turn it off a few times in the past so it's a feature I don't mind. It doesn't take all that long for an iron to wake. I'd just trained myself to wake it up and then bring and set up whatever it was that I was going to iron. Usually by the time I set up my fabric the iron is hot and ready.

Most all the auto shut off irons can be by passed. This works for all of them I have tried it on: Buy a wedge iron stand and put the front end of the iron tilting down on it. Any stand that you can have the front end tilted down. The auto shut off will stay in the on position. When you want the auto shut off to be engaged, stand the iron up.

My Oliso died and I had to send the whole iron in and they replaced it. It all of a sudden wouldn't get hot, only warm. I had to pay an arm and a leg for shipping, but I got a new iron out of the deal.

We my basic B&D iron goes out. I will buy another cheap iron at a store and be happy with it. I just want a no steam iron, the holes mess up fabric edges when I move it. If I need moisture I use a spray bottle.

Just out of curiosity... I have tried to find an iron stand like you mentioned and could not locate it online. Is there a brand or model number?

I have a Continental iron purchased from Amazon.com for around $40 (no shipping cost with Prime for 2-day delivery). It is a dry iron (non-steam), doesn't have an auto shut off, and gets and stays hot. I have several irons, cordless, steam, B&D, Rowenta, but the Continental is my absolute favorite. I've dropped it on the floor twice, and it keeps on working. I purchased it when I started using fusibles so that I wouldn't have to worry about having non-fused little hole-shaped places. Now I use it for everything.
