Love the pinwheel. There's alot of free patterns out there that would look pretty with little girl fabrics. Here's a cute little one if you like appliqué, you wouldn't need to do the 3 D things for a quilt.

I love Janet Wickell at about.com. She has lots of quilting lessons, advice and is always posting new quilts to make--all free. She has quite a few baby quilt patterns (again, for free. You can subscribe to her website and get regular emails from her on quilting and quilt patterns.

I'm gonna ask you a question? Do you have a favorite block, you said you were leaning towards the pinwheel? Then make it girlie!! I've done 4P with solid white in between and for one of them I hand-quilted designs like ducks, etc and the other 4P was done on point with little pink rosettes tacked down in the center of the white. Hate to say it, but IMHO, this is where the matterial makes the quilt.

Enjoy!!! Babies are a wonderful gift!!!

Oops, a little more information. If you go to Janet Wickell's site, click on quilt patterns (on left side). Once there you can look through all her patterns.

Here's my favorite baby quilt that she did:

I always do pinwheels for baby quilts. I use one fabric for the background and a 3 fabrics of 4 colors for the pinwheels. I have done two with lavender backgrounds, one with a yellow background, one with a cream with a tiny floral background, one with a pale gray background and two with an orange background. The two with the orange backgrouds were for boys and all the pinwheels are blue, purple, teal and green. On the girls quilts the pinwheels are pink, yellow, lavender or peach and green.
