Why are machine manufacturers so cagey about the throat size? I have a Janome 7700 with an 11" throat but when I was in the process of searching on line, I found it very difficult to tell on most machines. The descriptions would consistently talk about the work space to the LEFT of the needle and be very ambiguous about the really important throat space. Ugggh!

Even if the throat spaces measure the same on different machines in length, the height makes a huge difference. Both my Janome 6500 and my Juki TL98Q are supposed to have a 9" throat space. However the Juki is much higher and the overall space is more rectangular making it much easier to guide a King sized quilt through. The Janome space widens out on a slant and the machine is much thicker near the needle which definitely cuts down on your available space for quilting. It's not easy comparing exact throat space on machines.

I absolutely LOVE my HQ Sweet Sixteen for FMQing!! Sews like dream, likes all threads with very little tension adjustment, and has the space to quilt a large quilt.

The Janome 8900 has 11.5 to right of the needle at a price much less than Bernina. I believe Berninas are great machines, but too much for features found on other high quality machines for less of an investment.

I agree with Lady Diana. I just got my Janome Horizon 8900 and the throat space is 11.5 and they give more height as well. Wonderful, fabulous great machine and the price was very nice, $2200.00 so I am happy happy.
