I can purchase wholecloth tops inexpensively from the local Amish. If I design my own, I start with paper. Once my design is final, I will mark out the final design on white muslin with a sharpie. It then goes into my pattern library. To transfer, I will lay my fabric over the muslin pattern and trace. My dining room table is glass, so I can turn it into a giant light table if necessary.
