Why quilters like me should never buy kits!

I have a question...if you buy a kit at a LQS or wherever in person...are you allowed to open up that kit and make sure there are all the peices that are supposed to be in the kit? I would think you could do that before you purchase the kit or even after you purchase it as long as you stand right there even with an employee to make sure its all there. Kits are not cheap and being shorted in one, would really tick me off.
