I thought my backing piece was the deligthful 108" stuff--but alas it's not. Rats. I hate figuring out backs. :?
The top is 80 x 94, so I'll make the back 88 x 102 for the quilter.... and the pattern said to get 6 yards for the back, which I did. I think I have a few inches more than that--6.5 yards maybe.
If I cut 3 pieces 88" by 30"--there's not enough... and cutting what I have and sewing it down the middle is short...
Besides adding more of a different fabric--any suggestions? (I wanted to use the leftovers for another CW top.... not for the back to this.)
What do you suggest?

My suggestion is to tear 2 pieces 88" long, then you will still have 58" left.
From that 58" cut a piece about 45" long and then split that down the middle so that you have 2 pieces of aprox 21x45. Sew those two together so you have one pieced section of 88 x 21. Sew that section between the two whole sections of 88 x 44. Give or take a few inches depending on the width of your fabrics.
Hope this helps

I think I see what you mean--but the fabric is only 40". I just drew out what you said--and the last piece would be 20" and it needs to be 22". Grrrrrr.
It was a great idea though. If the fabric was wider you would have solved my problem....Thanks. :D

Yes, the stripes would go the other direction on the pieced part. You can try the two long pieces and the split the remaining 30" piece into 4 pieces of aprox 10 x 30 and sew them end to end to get a 118" aprox piece and cut that down to the 102" and put it down the middle of the quilt lenghtwise, so that you have a long piece on either side and the long piece that is really 4 pieces down the middle between them. Then all your stripes would be going in the same direction. Do you have any extra blocks or pieces of other fabrics, You could also use them or any other coordinating piece down the middle.

Or if you are 2" short on what you mentioned in last post you can add a strip of something else to make up those 2". This is very doable, I have used some creative things to make a back fit, including a "cross" of another fabric down the middle of the back as well as using extra blocks alternating with a coordinating fabric down the middle. You'll get it to work

Gayle--that will work!! And I could add a few 10" square pieces to that middle part! Thank you so much for your help!! I owe you one!! :D :D :D :D
I'd relaly like a cheek kiss smiley here....
Off to cut....
I just saw your next reply--I think I like the down the middle part better than adding the 2"--for the look.
I need to learn to be more creative with backs.
As soon as It' done...I'll post a photo for you.
