of a baby quilt? I'd like to do that before I give it to them as I won't see them again for a while. If I don't put the hanger on, they won't be able to hang it up. If I do put it on and they ask "what is this sleeve for?" it will be pretty embarrassing. Is it a work of art? no! It is bright and cheerful and happy looking,

Do you want them to hang it up on a wall?
Or use ir elsewhere - like on a floor or to snuggle with?
I don't think it is tacky or embarrassing. If they ask, just tell them you put it on just in case they decide they would rather hang it.
On the other hand, there are clips available that clip onto the quilt and have rings on the other side to run a rod through - Curtain rings with clips.
I often put sleeves on quilts, even king & queen sized ones. The sleeve is not even noticeable so doesn't in any way distract and if someone wants to hang these quilt it is ready. My daughter's king sized wedding quilt spends the winters on their bed the rest in the year it hangs on a drapery rod covering the sliding glass doors.

No, not tacky to add a sleeve. Nice to be thinking ahead.

I don't think it's tacky. Just tell them what you've done and if they decide later they want to use it as a wall hanging then so be it. OR you could attach tabbies for the baby to play with and they could hang it later on smaller rod.
A hanging sleeve is a nice idea. You might consider sewing the two ends of the hanger closed just in case they decide to use it as a crib quilt. You don't want little baby arms or legs getting caught in the sleeve while they're sleeping. You could show the parents how to open the sleeve ends in the event they want to hang it on a wall.
I don't think it is tacky and I usually put it on every quilt I make. The sleeve doesn't interfere with putting the baby on the floor with it.

If you add a hanging sleeve that's the same fabric as the backing, it almost disappears into the quilt when it's not being hung on a wall. I always do mine this way if I can.
