With the newer fat matresses, I can't figure out how long to make a quilt so it will tuck in and stay that way :-( :(

Hi and welcome from Oklahoma. I make mine 6 to 8 inches bigger than the mattress.

On this same subject, I have Amish king size quilt I got as a wedding gift. I was wondering does someone have a size chart for making a quilt with an allowance for pillows?

The one I have is longer so you can tuck your pillows under it and pull it over them...(Like when you were a kid)

(I know I can measure it when I get home, but this post just made me think of it and figured if someone know I could add some to my current quilt project for a friend. :) )

Measure how thick your mattress is and the width of the top. Remember you need to add this to 3 sides (can't forget the bottom). Then if you're going to tuck under the mattress I would add atleast 4". This is how I would do it. Hope it helps.

i have one chart that says ...
measure the exact top of the matteress, measure the overhang (usually about 15")add that measurement to the top measurement, add 18" for 'pillow-tuck'
that seemed a bit much to me, but then i went in and did the measuring and it all worked out perfectly.

If I keep the quilt for our bed I make pillow covers of some sort, I use them as a bedspread, I don't like the looks when put over pillows. If I give them away, I don't know how they may use them, so it's up to that person.

I would think 5 to 6 inches bigger would be good.

"The final factor is the treatment of your pillows. Most people like to cover their pillows with the quilt. To do this, an allowance for a "pillow tuck" of 10" to 18" is required depending on the thickness of the pillows. Many people, alternatively, use pillow shams (decorative pillow covers) eliminating the need for the "pillow tuck" allowance."
