I've been quilting with my handguilded Gammill Classic, no stitch regulator machine for ten years. Probably 95% of my customer base prefer custom or heirloom quilting so I do a lot of freehanding. Love using rulers, crosshatching, and SID, but I am trying to do a few more pantographs. I have quilted several quilts that have won ribbons at local quilt shows and fairs. I have never got up the nerve to enter a quilt in a large international show and probably never will as I prefer traditional quilting. I would be most happy to answer any questions and offer tips.

TIP: Make sure your quilt top is as level as possible - this helps with the thread tension.

Use same color thread on top as in the bobbin -this will decrease the thread dots showing on the opposite sides.

Bast down the sides of the quilt sandwich as you progress down the top - this holds the top, batting and backing secure and makes it easy to add the binding.

I have a Gammill with Statler Stitcher longarm machine with a 12 ft fram and do quilting for others. I do mostly edge-to-edge (E2E) work because that is the least expensive for quilters who want to keep their costs down; but I can do custom work as well. Batting is included in the first quilt I quilt for you. Please see my website on how to prepare your quilt for a longarm quilter. www.InThePinkQuilting.com

time sure flies when you are having fun!
    i've been long-arm
quilting for 8 years now for other people,
did it for myself for a couple before being brave enough to dare work on someone else's master piece :)
from the beginning I offered classes so there has been lots of different quilting done, we use the laser, we cut out cardboard patterns and follow them, use stensils... I mostly freehand everything. i tell people i'm too 'un-disciplined' to do panto's...i just don't like to most of the time, i enjoy freehand quilting; and so far my customers have been happy with what i do, they all keep coming back :)

Am I a longarm quilter? Let's just say that I am the 'Weakest Link' in longarm quilting.

I had a 1990 Gammill Classic, no bells or whistles, no stitch regulator, and just yesterday, it left my house. I sold it. Today, I ordered an A-1 and will have it before Thanksgiving. Like all my quilts, I do it just for my own pleasure. I have never entertained the idea of doing customer quilts. First, because I'm not that good. And, second, because I've had several jobs and I don't want another one. I love retirement and doing my own thing. Can't wait until my new machine gets here.

I am a longarmer, with a Tin Lizzie taking residency in my sewing room. She is on a 10 foot frame. I have been doing it for 3 years. But, boy am I behind on my work. I have 8 tops that I have made over the past 2 years and just haven't had a chance to quilt them. I do some stencils, but mostly free motion quilting. I don't know if I want to do quilts for others..I am just enjoying my own quilting.
    Peace and blessings,

I have been quilting w/ a longarm for about 4 1/2 years. Geez.....time does fly. Bertha is a Gammill Classic. No stitch regulator and she's a plain Jane. A majority of my customers love pantographs. There are a few that just have to have custom, but here lately they'll be in the shop to pick theirs up when someone else is getting theirs and have said outloud, I wish I let you do a pantograph on mine. With a majority of the new pantograph patterns coming out that are fully interlocking and very detailed it's getting more and more popular.

I am having trouble with my 1990 Gammill. Could you put me in touch with the person who bought your machine?
Or would you be willing to help with some queations?
