If the 12" star has 9 components that are 4" each 4 1/2" unfinished
An 8" block, each component would be an odd size pieces...
You would probably want a pattern with templates

Or change to a 9" block, where each piece would be 3" or 3 1/2" unfinished :D:D:D

It depends on the pattern. If it is a free one and you post a link, people can help you.

The "It's OK if you sit on my quilt" book has different sizes too.

How many components does your pattern have? (Trying to piggy-back on amma's comment.)
