IMHO....If we all followed the "Could of, Should of, Would of" RULES .....Many of us would not be quilters. Do what appeals to You...what You like...what makes You happy.
Happy quilting, Beckie

i've made a number of breath-taking quilts with no black or white in them- contrast and interest can be achieved with any color as long as you pay attention to values- black and white in their place do add contrast but are certainly not required in order to create a successful quilt

Who in the world told you that? I am curious who told you that "rule".

It is, as several other quilters have said, complete B.S.

I agree with Dolphyngyrl. I've never heard of this.

Must have been said by a member of the quilt police. Don't worry about it as long as you have a color scheme that's pleasing to you!

Since Lancaster is in Amish/Mennonite county do you think that this may be an Amsh quilt "rule"?

Haven't heard that one...I have heard about the dash of turquoise to lift a scrappy...but that's about it. When it comes to colour/pattern I am a bit of a renegade....the only "rules" of quilting I follow are more along the construction/pressing/putting together stuff. It's all about tone/value really....black or white could be a detrimental addition to some quilts.

I think every quilt should have some orange for a little zing. LOL Use what you like. I am not big on white and so so on black.

I think you can use any color you like in a quilt and leave out those colors you don't want to use. After all, your the one making it.
