I'm just next door to you here in Southeastern Idaho so I understand about it being cold. The cotton battings, unless you double them, are simply not warm enough for our winters here. What you can use that will really work is a wool batting. It quilts like a dream, isn't really any thicker than the cotton battings, but it works well for warmth! I also buy a cotton/poly blend (I think it's 80/20) that is warmer than the regular cotton battings, but the wool batting still wins the prize for me. Hope this helps.

I LOVE to see a quilt with worn edges! Much better than one stored in a closet. It's cool when onie of my sons mention that their quilt is getting worn and they'd like to get on the list for a new one! I put a brand new one on our bed 5 years ago, and have used it almost exclusively since then. It has been washed, used, and starting to wear now.

We use them and as long as I have working hands and feet if they wear out I will make another one. Any excuse. (seems like a good one.. oh darn its worn out.. time to make more...)
