I am trying to make this block. All my points are where they're supposed to be, but it doesn't square up to 12 1/2. What am I doing wrong?

Looks like your outside HST are cut to small. From your photo appears you will loose the points on the top and bottom when it's sewed together in a quilt. I'd cut them 1/2" bigger and then trim to 12 1/2". Maybe that would help

Jaba, that's what I think too. Fortunately, that is an easy fix.

Since I am not the worlds most accurate at cutting I ALWAYS cut larger on hst's. if it says 3 7/8 I cut 4 1/8th then trim back and it works. Learned that a year ago on the quilting board when I had the same trouble my fellow members in the boom 8 taught me a lot of cool tricks. that is one of the best ones. easy to trim back not so easy to add to it.

Linda, so if the pattern calls for the square to be 3 7/8 you make the square 4 1/8 then cut it into a HST? You always add 1/4" to what the pattern calls for? The one trick that someone taught me that has been a life saver is after the squares/HST or whatever are sewn to "trim" them to the size it calls for....so much easier to make them fit into the pattern if they are the correct size and some NOT just a tad off! Gave the blue quilt from one of the booms to a friend for his birthday yesterday and I must say it looks fantastic on his bed, manly...thought that would be better than the mauve, flowerly one! Finished my black/white top for my son for Christmas...Back to 5 to go to the quilters.
When is the next swap??? LOL

Joan I will answer your question as to why I said they were too small to molly......she had stated that she did not have a pattern and was coping one that she had seen so wasn't sure of her measurements. The center looks great and matched perfectly, but she just cut the outside setting pieces too small (I think). If I have exact measurements on a block that's what I cut it at.

An update... I have sent off the last block to QuilterMomma and I have finished with everybodies blocks. All are received and all are sent. I want to thank everyone for swapping with me. This has been a fun swap and I hope it is offered again.
Now to work. I have decided to make table runners and table mats with my blocks.
