Among the Leaves Swap

Please use 100% pre-washed cotton (required) and make sure your blocks measure 12 ½" unfinished. Select fabrics that will hold up to a lot of love, wear, tears, draggin', cuddlin', washing, and trips through the dryer. Fabrics that fray easily, or are fairly easy to see through are not good candidates for this swap.

For a sample of the way your block should look, see this pattern: http://www.quilterscache.com/M/MapleLeafBlock.html

PLEASE NOTE: This pattern uses a scant quarter inch in its directions.

THEME/COLORS:
The leaves will be any fall colors/theme fabrics you would like (please note that bright colors will stand out better). ((sorry for typo))

The background will be black. (You do not have to use solid blacks but it needs to read as black from a distance)

Make 12 blocks alike, you will receive one of yours back and 11 different blocks. This is so you receive blocks that coordinate best with yours.

Please mark EACH ONE of your blocks with a little slip of paper pinned to each block, or a sticky label can be used, please put the label on the back as sometimes some of the 'sticky' adheres to the block itself. Or you may write in somewhere that it will not bleed through with a permanent thin pigma pen. Please include your real name AND Board name.

Send them to me along with an ADDRESSED RETURN Flat Rate Stamped envelope ($4.95) for returning blocks. No other return method will be accepted.

Sign-up will close on SUNDAY August 26th, PM me if you wish to join.

Blocks due to me by THURSDAY September 15th. Please plan mailing accordingly!! Because of problems with the deadlines in other swaps, if there is going to be a problem with having them here by September 15, please pm me. You also have the option of dropping out of the swap. Any blocks received after September 15 will not be accepted and will be returned to you. There is plenty of time to sign up, and complete the blocks. It is not fair for those who do honor the deadline to be waiting and waiting and waiting.

Please review the rules that apply to all swaps. They apply to this swap, too. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-20154-1.htm

Please note, in particular, the rules for mailing and those regarding swappers who fail to fulfill their swap obligations.

If you want to make multiple sets, just make sure you have 12 blocks of each SET design. You will receive back as many sets as you send. The flat rate envelope will hold two sets. Any more than that, you will need another flat rate return addressed stamped envelope.

This sounds wonderful!

mom-6 07-02-2011 04:17 PM

Question. . . I would like to use up stash and therefore not have all 12 blocks out of a single fabric choice. Would this be acceptable or would it confuse things too much?

Debra Faye 07-02-2011 08:48 PM

This is my first swap and I'm excited to participate!

NANAOF2BOYS 07-03-2011 06:50 AM

sounds great just pm'd you on it :)

I'm asking that they all be identical

mom-6 07-04-2011 06:27 PM

Thanks for the clarification! I'll see what I can find that will do a whole set before I sign up.

FQ Stash Queen 07-04-2011 08:04 PM

Count me in. Am sending PM. Good to see you hosting again bookworm. Sure hope everyone doesn't use that same pattern, or do you want them all the same?

bookworm 07-05-2011 06:09 AM

Theyre supposed to be the same pattern

quiltinghere 07-05-2011 06:26 AM

Ohhh this sounds interesting - especially with 'BLACK' as a background and bright fall colors for the leaves.

Before I sign up though I'd love to see a sample of the block using a 'black' background.

sew cornie 07-05-2011 12:07 PM

step away from the swap, Jen. Step away from the swap. lol. Not committing yet, but this will be a hard one to pass up.

KGoodhand 07-05-2011 12:38 PM

This sounds like fun! I will have to see what I have in my stash before I commit!!!

RedGarnet222 07-05-2011 02:35 PM

Quiltinghere ...If you go to the link of the leaf block, on the second page mary's sample blocks that you can click on to see, are with the black backround.

This is interesting... I might have to join this one! I love fall colors.

I'm thinking on this one, may be a stupid question but I'm new quilter, my question is, what is 1/4" scant? I know what 1/4" seam allowance is, but I don't know what is a scant? LOL

Oh Man! Seeing that picture makes it even harder to say no . . . .

ColesGirl 07-06-2011 08:32 AM

I'm in. Just sent you a PM.

FQ Stash Queen 07-06-2011 11:27 AM

Do you have any idea of how much of each fabric we will need to do all 12 blocks?

pattis47 07-06-2011 05:08 PM

here is my attempt with a minor change

Here is my attempt with a minor change I did the stem in brown instead of the orange. The orange just didnt look right, so I tried this.

The block was very easy to do. it is just 4 HST's and the block w/ the stem. It took longer to trim up that block than anything else. You have to be careful when trimming or the stem will be off center if it isn't squared correctly.....

Thanks lv2sew2011 and redgarnet222 for the links.

I'll have to see how the rest of July goes to see if I can squeeze these blocks in.

They would go perfect in my "Fall" collection. :)

fabric_fancy 07-07-2011 03:07 AM

i'm in for this one

I was going to say I didn't have time to figure this out for you...but...then I remember I now have EQ7 :) :)

So IF I figured it out correctly (or if the EQ7 figured it out correctly) - to make 12 - 12 1/2" UNfinished blocks

The Background needs about 1 yard
The leaf needs about 1 3/8 yard.
(the leaf and stem are same fabric in my example)

Good Luck - let us know if that yardage works for you.

bookworm 07-07-2011 05:47 AM

Thank you for doing that Quiltinghere

dotcomdtcm 07-09-2011 05:31 AM

Important Tip:
I just collected 25 Maple Leaf blocks on another swap. It is critically important to leave a 1/4 " beyond the points, or you will cut some off when you are sewing up your blocks. Just be really careful.

bookworm 07-09-2011 03:38 PM

Can't wait to get paid again so I can venture to the fabric store. Anyone having any luck with the pattern?

A scant 1/4" is just slightly less than a 1/4" seam, when sewing a seam.

Linda58 07-09-2011 03:48 PM

I am definately in for this swap. I will sign up when my blocks are done!!

Here are the Maple Leaves I collected. It is a terrific idea to use a dark background. Bookworm, you are one smart cookie!

pattis47 07-09-2011 04:43 PM

If you are thinking of joining a swap, as a new quilter, this would be a good one for you. The pattern is very easy. Just follow the directions and do it one step at a time and you will be fine.

NO Question is stupid, please feel free to ask anytime. someone on here will be more than willing to help you understand and become a better quilter. Remember we were all new quilters at one time. Some of us it was 50 yrs ago and some of us it was 50 days ago. Continue to ask the questions and it will save you alot of "unsewing" or better known as the froggy cry "rippit". We all understand and have been in your position. To answer your question, a scant 1/4 is just less than a 1/4". An example would be if you draw a line on your fabric to mark your 1/4 to stitch on, then sew just on the outside of that line. That will give you your scant 1/4. Hope this helps.

If you'd like Lv2sew2011 I can send you rotary cutting instructions for making it with a full 1/4" seam. I'm going to draft it out on EQ5 anyway (I find it's easier for me this way)

This should make it a little easier. The stem part you still need to do the way quilter's cache says, couldn't manage to get it to draft right.

That would be great, unless you think the one I've already done is good enough!

bookworm 07-09-2011 06:52 PM

I think the one you did looks great!

Lv2sew2011 07-09-2011 10:42 PM

Ok, that was my sample block, to see if I could do it and I can...LOL so would you just put me down for 1 set for now, and if I have time maybe two....Tuesday will need to go shopping for the fabric I would like to use...

Thanks
Donna

Wholeheart Mom 07-11-2011 03:50 PM

I know that the Quilter's Cache pattern makes a 12" block, but we need another half inch for this swap.

How are measuring and cutting to add the extra half inch? I just finished up the Fall Dresdan plate swap and I want to get started on this right away, so I hope someone can help.

the block at quilter's cache is for a 12 inch finished so when you put it together it will actually measure 12.5 inches and thats what you send in for the swap.

then when we all sew our blocks together it will become 12 inches finished.
