Boomerang 7.0-EARTH Group

Boomerang Friendship Swap 7.0 Mailing deadline to mail all blocks home to their owners is July 15, 2012.

Hello and welcome to the Boomerang Friendship Swap. You are the EARTH Group. Please remember how the swap works.

How it works:
1) You will select a fabric or selection of fabrics from your stash (or you can buy new-up to you) and cut them in to Fat Eighths (18 x 11).
2) You will send each member in the swap one F8 to work with. The person who receives the fabric will make you a block with your fabric in it.
3) You may advise the person of colors you would prefer they use or not use but please do not request specific blocks. This is meant to be a “friendship” swap where your friends pick, design and create a beautiful 12.5” unfinished block for you based on the fabric you send them.
4) In turn you will receive an F8 from each member in the swap and have to make them a block.

Rules/Guidelines:
(please make sure to also refer to the basic policies that apply to all swaps announced through the board: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-20154-1.htm )
1) Please make sure all fabric is prewashed prior to making the block and sending it home.
2) When sending your fabric please make sure it is in some kind of sealed item (Ziploc baggy, saran wrap) with a piece of paper or even a peel-off label with your name, address and quilt board name so that the items are protected and won’t get mixed up. Please do this when returning blocks as well. (This way if for some unhuman reason the PO mangles a package the plastic has a chance at saving the work and with an address visible it just might make it home)
3) Please mail your F8 within three weeks of receiving the address list. This helps ensure we all have ample time to work on everyone's blocks.
4) Please handle all fabric received with the utmost care and place it somewhere where it won’t be lost or forgotten about.
5) In order to help keep track of the blocks sent and received I will be emailing out a chart to all members who participate so that you may fill it in as we go.
6) All blocks should be 12.5” unfinished. They can be regular pieced, paper-pieced, appliquéd-whatever the quilter decides to do. It is up to each individual. Again the feeling is to get a true friendship quilt out of this. Please remember to measure two, three times and cut once and do your very best to make sure the finished block you are sending home is 12.5". PLEASE PLEASE MEASURE YOUR BLOCKS!
7). Please remember to trim your threads, cut your dog ears...in essence remove any excess work from the back of your block that the receiver should not have to worry about. We do not want to have any extra bulk in these blocks that are not needed (harder to quilt them :-) )
8) You may sign the back of the block if you wish to or perhaps pin a small muslin square with your name, where you live and what the name of the block is.
9) Please measure your block before mailing it. We all started somewhere but it is nice to be able to get all the blocks back measuring the same size so the quilt can go together nicely.
10) Please make a block that you yourself would be happy and proud to call your own.
11) This is a one block per swapper swap. You will have to make 16 blocks in this group.
12) Please be courteous to our swappers and post when you receive either someone's fabric or a completed block. This helps us to know the postal gremlins are not at work lol If for some reason you cannot get on the board to post please let me know and I will let the members know. We appreciate interaction with all of our swappers.
13) Have FUN!!! This swap will let you explore your creativity as you do not have to make the same block for everyone. You can try that block you always wanted to. Try new fabrics, new colors...step outside of your comfort zone in to a different box

PLEASE DO NOT SEND FABRICS/BLOCKS WITH PERFUME OR OVERWHELMING FRAGRANCES ON THEM DUE TO ALLERGIES. THERE MAY BE MEMBERS OR FAMILY MEMBERS WHO HAVE SEVERE ALLERGIES TO CERTAIN THINGS SO PLEASE TRY YOUR BEST TO NOT SEND ANYTHING THAT COULD CAUSE AN ATTACK

Also please remember when posting on the board to use members board names or just first names and not their full names. This is a courtesy to our members as the information here can be seen publicly and we do not want anyone to have that private info.

Please, NO public complaints or criticisms of other swappers, items received, or other type for any reason. ALL complaints must be addressed by Private Message (pm) to me. THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE!!!!!

Just one more friendly reminder-please make sure your packages have proper postage on them-if you are unsure either take them to the PO or throw another stamp on. We do not want anyone to have to incur any extra expense during this fun time.

I think you will find yourself enjoying the blocks because you can work at your pace as they come in as long as they are all out by the established deadline.

As always please feel free to PM me with any questions or concerns-I am always happy to help.

Hugs
April

How exciting, I am ready to go, heading out the door in the morning... But not too early as I am a night owl. getting to bed by 4:am is about normal for me. Unless I have an appointment or managed to get up to early, then I might make it to bed by 2:am.

Honestly when I retired I always thought I was a morning person, I had to be to work by 6:30. Now that I can pick my own hours I am for sure a night owl. I love sewing at night when it is quiet.

My fabric is bright Parrots on a black and green back ground. I love the fabric and am at the end of my bolt. So this one I am going to keep for me, in my sewing room.

OK Can't wait to get started and meet all the new friends and get re-acquainted with the ones I have already met.

urgodschild2 03-14-2012 07:43 AM

Ok I am excited about this too. I am leaving for Australia tomorrow for 6 weeks. I am going to buy material down there and I will send it to everyone from down under. BUT don't worry, I will put an envelop in for all of you to return the square to CAL where I do live. My son in the mean time will be telling me who has sent me F8 so that I can let you all know that I got them but I won't be able to work on them until I get home. Oh it takes about 2 weeks to get mail from down under so I am going to buy, wash and mail my material the first week I am there.
I am thinking of getting the babuska doll pattern material. I love it.

I agree with Marytoddliz about being retired. I am a morning person before I retired. BUt now I prefer to sleep in and stay up late. Although when the occasion calls for it, I can revert to that morning person. A true morning person is up, awake and rearing to go the minute their feet hit the ground. That's me and in Australia I will be again a morning person because I want to walk the gks to school. So I will be going to bed around 10 down under. LOL.
I will miss my lazy wake ups in the USA and staying up until 2 am.

WOW! I want to go to Australia too!! Are you going just for fun?? Will you be able to sew down there too?! Really fun! (I've heard fabric is really expensive "down under!" Is that true? (Excited to see your fabric since I do not think I am familiar with it).

I'm also retired--I am definitely more of a "night owl." I like mornings once I am up, especially this time of year with daylight savings time!!

Excited to be a part of "EARTH" Boomers!! I have all my squishies ready to mail out today or tomorrow. Can't wait to see what you all make for me. I am also looking forward to seeing all your fabric squishies so I can start the design process. (That won't be till around March 27th as I am out of town til then. Once home I will let you know if I have received your f8's--don't worry til then--we are having our mail held at the PO--hopefully none of your pretty squishies get lost there!!)

marytoddliz 03-14-2012 11:57 AM

I thought I would share my brain storm idea with you; Since this is the busy season for me, I have decided to be "better organized" So when I made my envelopes last night I made a matching manila envelope, to send the grown up Blocks home in. My idea is to put the squishy that I receive from my fellow "swappers", into the manila envelope, then when the block is finished mail it out!

I will let you know how well my idea works by the time we are done. Today I am super optimistic!

And my Earth Squishes are in the mail! I had to do a little improvising because I ran out of material. So a few of you are getting some really cute peace signs. The rest are getting a very bright Parrot fabric that I totally love. I had purchased a bolt of it and the last of it is now on it's way out.

Well Happy sewing ladies, hope you have fun in Australia Barbara, I would love to go there one day! I have a friend that lives there and a few email pals; On my bucket list! And have fun at Spring training Karen!

marytoddliz 03-14-2012 12:00 PM

Barbara, when my feet hit the floor in the morning the only thing my brain is able to register is Cold!

I am very blessed, I have a wonderful husband who brings me that first cup of coffee, he is a real morning person cheerful, singing, whistling... Drives me crazy, till I am awake!

yayaquilts 03-14-2012 12:23 PM

Thanks Marybeth. My husband is a crazy morning person too, and he makes the coffee. (So much so he sets his alarm for 7 am because he doesn't want to sleep in too late and miss the morning! WEIRD I think!) I am slow to get going. With Daylight savings time I'm easily up by 8 !!!

To stay organized I pin the envelope to each squishie and each block I receive back. Definitely helps to keep track of which one belongs to whom!

dotcomdtcm 03-15-2012 06:14 AM

I took a trip down Memory Lane while preparing my beautiful fabric for you. I surely developed my love for fabric when I was a teenager. I worked after school at Gerta's Needlecrafts on Rt 46 in Parsippany, NJ. Perhaps you once shopped there! We made prom dresses and circle skirts. I coveted the remnants. The owner stocked Concord cottons- just like the one I am cutting today! Roses on navy. Let's call this "American Beauty"! In the mail today...Dotty

Sandynorm 03-15-2012 06:22 AM

I am so excited about getting started, but it will not be till next week sometime. My fabric is picked out and washed, but I had to get ready for vacation so I have not cut it yet. And I am still on the beach in sunny Daytona for a couple more days, and in the quilt shops buying fabric later in the days!

urgodschild2 03-15-2012 09:05 AM

Yes material is expensive in Australia......About $18 to 20. Plus our American Dollar is about 5% less then theirs.
Ok I guess even though I get up at around 8 to 9 nowadays......I am still that crazy person who is singing, whistling, etc. I know, I drive the rest of you nuts. LOL I do stay up late at night though and I love that. The nicest thing about being retired is that no one tells me when to get up or go to sleep. lol.

Ok a question about the envelops. Do you all just use a simple office envelop? I need to know because I need to buy them here today before I leave so that I have them down there. Saves me money. Plus I am bringing my roll of stamps. How many stamps do you think it will take or how many do you all put on? I hope someone answers this before I leave. I don't fly out until 11:30 tonight.

MaryMo 03-15-2012 10:37 AM

I haven't received list yet ... difficulty with e-mail program on my end I think ... I really looking forward to mailing out fabric and getting started!

Crqltr 03-15-2012 02:02 PM

I mailed my fabric out today, I used a office envelope and each one was a 65 cent stamp. I can not wait to get started!

dotcomdtcm 03-15-2012 02:28 PM

I buy yellow envelopes at the 99 cent store, stronger. Wrap in plastic wrap. Eager to get started too!

dahna42 03-15-2012 02:32 PM

I mailed my F8's out yesterday, let's have fun ladies.
I am also newly retired from teaching, but I must say I am still a morning person.

marytoddliz 03-15-2012 05:42 PM

I mailed mine out yesterday and everyone except the one going to Canada was 65 cents. I took them in and had them all weighed. The one going to Canada was I think $1.17 but I had two pieces of fabric since OK Darla is in two groups with me, worked out great and cost less. The Mail Lady told me that I did not have to fill out a customs form because there was no value assigned to the fabric.

I use a regular envelope pressed fabric wrapped in cling wrap. I have found out the more expensive part can often be the returning block, depending on the number of seams. More seams means more bulk. So this time to save the headache of not knowing I just bought the 6 X 9 manila envelopes and removed the fasteners. The mail lady told me more than likely it will still be 65 cents to mail but being in a larger envelope they will be flatter, and flatter is what we want so it will go through the machine.

Have fun in Australia~

marcialee 03-16-2012 02:25 AM

I will cut fabric this weekend and mail on Monday

Kehoeta 03-16-2012 10:20 AM

Hi everyone... I'm so glad to be part of this group. I am going through my stash tonight to see what I want to mail out.

Is it ok to say that I'm so jealous of you retirees.. I am still working - and it can make me crazy. I swear the fun I have sewing is the only thing that keep me sane.

I expect my mail won't be going out until next week some time.

Australia is on my bucket list. Have fun.

dotcomdtcm 03-16-2012 12:49 PM

My first f8th arrived today, from dahna42. Off to my stash! Dotty

yayaquilts 03-16-2012 04:59 PM

Oh you are so lucky, and tomorrow is St Patrick's Day no less! I am eagerly waiting mail tomorrow!

I am working on a patch quilt that is browns and greens, I have a 4p and then a block. My goal is to be random! Random is so much harder than a pattern! I guess I had my thinking wrong, but next time I will know to plan on my randomness!

I am finally working on the last row, and the seam ripper is getting a really good work out!

The list of you all finally landed in my e-mail tonight so envelopes will go out Monday or Tuesday. I'm really looking forward to get going on these blocks. Yeah!!! :p

marytoddliz 03-16-2012 11:38 PM

MaryMo, I love your sunflower, it is really beautiful. Reminds me of my time in Kansas. I spent a few weeks with some friends and they lived by a field of sunflowers, it was so awesome, I could not get enough pictures of it!

marcialee 03-17-2012 04:24 AM

received my squishy from dahna42 and will send my f8th out with a block for you...I will send the remaining f8ths out Monday. So happy to be doing this with you all.

dotcomdtcm 03-17-2012 07:23 AM

This time I am returning scraps with the blocks I made. We all may want to add a few of our own blocks., I'll treat for the extra 45cent stamp. And I'd appreciate my rose scraps if you have any left. 17 blocks plus 1 from me does not come out
even. But if I make 3 , I can make a 4 x 5 top. This is my 2nd boom. I'm learning from experience. Next time, I'll start with a 3 yd cut! Thanks, Dotty

yayaquilts 03-17-2012 08:04 AM

Last Boom I returned the fabric that was left over from the f8, but I didn't get any(not complaining BTW-just saying). What's the consensus of this group? Do you want your leftover fabric back with your finished block? Postage for returning the finished blocks home with their leftover fabric was $.85 in US if I remember correctly.

On another note, Happy National Quilting Day and Happy St Patrick's Day!! I'm bummed I can be quilting today-but I don't have my machine with me. Maybe next year!

ljdugas31 03-17-2012 08:21 AM

You can keep my scraps, but i will send back yours if you want.

dotcomdtcm 03-17-2012 08:27 AM

Thanks Linda! I will whip out my handy spreadsheet & put NS by your name. Please put S by mine. I think I needs the scraps. Cheers~

dahna42 03-17-2012 08:58 AM

hey there, we have begun. I received two fabrics so far today.....dotcomdtem and marytoddliz....I will get working on them this weekend. Expect to see your squares next week.

dahna42 03-17-2012 08:59 AM

Question...should we send all scraps back to original sender?

dotcomdtcm 03-17-2012 09:22 AM

My suggestion is to ask the sender. I'd like mine & I'll send yours. I just made your block, dahna 42, and there is a decent amount left to return to you! Dotty

shnnn 03-17-2012 11:09 AM

I got my 1st f8th yesterday from marybeth. Been a crazy few days - my own choice - but still haven't gotten anything productive done. I've been driving 70 miles back and forth to where hubby is working, then home so the kids can get to school. So the goal for the weekend is to get the house cleaned up, my f8s cut and ready to go out by monday, and make some more progress on the bargello I'm working on. Between that I need to bake a bday cake and get some snuggle time with hubby - so the house probably wont get touched :p but oh well there's always next week, right?
As far as scraps, I bought extra - so if you want to send them back OK - but if not OK :D

marytoddliz 03-17-2012 01:01 PM

I received squishies today! I received from crqltr and I received on mystery F8 It is blue background with Trucks and cars and planes and trains and a few hearts and stars... I love a good mystery!

Does any one know why this belongs to?

Since it is a story rainy yucky day I think I will stay in and sew!

dotcomdtcm 03-17-2012 01:06 PM

I think the trains & trucks is from dahna42/Donna

marytoddliz 03-17-2012 01:13 PM

Oh yeah and my leftover fabric, send them back if you wish if not keep them. I think that last time April said it was up to the block maker. I didn't because I don't remember any one asking and I wanted to make a scrap quilt out of all the scraps I had left over, but I will send any back that are requested. I like your idea about making another column and put a s/ns.

I have a leprechaun in my key board today! many mistakes, but I think it is a good thing as I have to think before I post!

Happy St Patrick's Day~

marytoddliz 03-17-2012 01:14 PM

Thanks Dotty, good to know... I just love the fabric I have received so far very beautiful!

marytoddliz 03-17-2012 01:29 PM

Dotty, I love your Roses I think I am going to do a fussy cut for you, then I will have more to send back, plus I have some fabric that will go so nicely with it.

I did forget to ask you Dotty is this fabric for this group or the Wind group, or does it matter to you? I alway forget to put which group I send when I have more than one group, something to note for next time!

Now I am going to shut this computer down and fire up old Bess, my sewing machine.

have a super wonderful day~

LovingIzabella 03-17-2012 04:52 PM

So happy to see you all having a good time.
As far as the scraps o we usually do not send them home unless the original owner of the f8 specifically asks for them back :)
Have fun
Hugs
April

I received four squishes in the mail today. You all are fast! I still have to wash my fabric, make the envelopes, etc. I did just get back from two weeks in Hawaii with my daughter and four grandkids. Her husband is deployed and she had some minor surgery, so I went to help out. I came home to REST. I was busy from the time I got up until evening.

Of those four received today, one did not have a return address or note inside. I couldnot tell from the postmark either. The fabric is a blue background with small trucks, cars, definately a kids print. Please respond via email if it is yours.

This is going to be fun. I have been scanning books and on-line for blocks to make.
Diane
