Boomerang 9.0 PACIFIC O Group Thread

Boomerang Friendship Swap 9.0 PACIFIC Ocean Group
Mailing deadline is June 1, 2013

Hello and welcome to the PACIFIC Ocean group.

How it works:
1) You will select a fabric or selection of fabrics from your stash (or you can buy new-up to you) and cut them in to Fat Eighths (18 x 11) or (9x22) We prefer the 18 x 11 for this swap as it gives a bigger cutting area for certain blocks but either measurement will work.
2) You will send each member in the swap one F8 to work with. The person who receives the fabric will make you a block with your fabric in it.
3) You may advise the person of colors you would prefer they use or not use but please do not request specific blocks. This is meant to be a “friendship” swap where your friends pick, design and create a beautiful 12.5” unfinished block for you based on the fabric you send them.
4) In turn you will receive an F8 from each member in the swap and have to make them a block.

Rules/Guidelines:
(please make sure to also refer to the basic policies that apply to all swaps announced through the board: RULES FOR SWAPS AND SIMILAR ACTIVITIES - Updated 8 December 2010 )
1) Please make sure all fabric is prewashed prior to making the block and sending it home. You do not have to wash the fabric you receive.
2) When sending your fabric please make sure it is in some kind of sealed item (Ziploc baggy, saran wrap) with a piece of paper or even a peel-off label with your name, address and quilt board name so that the items are protected and won’t get mixed up. Please do this when returning blocks as well. (This way if for some unhuman reason the PO mangles a package the plastic has a chance at saving the work and with an address visible it just might make it home)
3) Please mail your F8 within three weeks of receiving the address list. This helps ensure we all have ample time to work on everyone's blocks.
4) Please handle all fabric received with the utmost care and place it somewhere where it won’t be lost or forgotten about.
5) In order to help keep track of the blocks sent and received I will be emailing out a chart to all members who participate so that you may fill it in as we go.
6) All blocks should be 12.5” unfinished. They can be regular pieced, paper-pieced, appliquéd-whatever the quilter decides to do. It is up to each individual. Again the feeling is to get a true friendship quilt out of this. Please do not request specific blocks as the idea is to let everyone, of every level join in and try new things and grow.
7). Please remember to trim your threads, cut your dog ears...in essence remove any excess work from the back of your block that the receiver should not have to worry about. We do not want to have any extra bulk in these blocks that are not needed (harder to quilt them :-) )
8) You may sign the back of the block if you wish to or perhaps pin a small muslin square with your name, where you live and what the name of the block is.
9) Please measure your block before mailing it. We all started somewhere but it is nice to be able to get all the blocks back measuring the same size so the quilt can go together nicely. So measure, measure and when you think it is right, measure once more
10) Please make a block that you yourself would be happy and proud to call your own.
11) This is a one block per swapper swap. You will have to make 35 blocks per large group (36 swappers in each group) or 15 blocks per small group (16 swappers in each group) (If you wish to do two groups please be aware this means you will have to mail 70 F8s and make 70 blocks or any combination of the possible group size). Please be aware of this before you commit yourself if you do not think you would be comfortable making 35 blocks in 4 months. (70 for 2 groups)
12) Please be courteous to our swappers and post when you receive either someone's fabric or a completed block. This helps us to know the postal gremlins are not at work lol If for some reason you cannot get on the board to post please let me know and I will let the members know. We appreciate interaction with all of our swappers. You can do a weekly update as well if that works better for you.
13) Have FUN!!! This swap will let you explore your creativity as you do not have to make the same block for everyone. You can try that block you always wanted to. Try new fabrics, new colors...step outside of your comfort zone in to a different box

PLEASE DO NOT SEND FABRICS/BLOCKS WITH PERFUME OR OVERWHELMING FRAGRANCES ON THEM DUE TO ALLERGIES. THERE MAY BE MEMBERS OR FAMILY MEMBERS WHO HAVE SEVERE ALLERGIES TO CERTAIN THINGS SO PLEASE TRY YOUR BEST TO NOT SEND ANYTHING THAT COULD CAUSE AN ATTACK

Also please remember when posting on the board to use members board names or just first names and not their full names. This is a courtesy to our members as the information here can be seen publicly and we do not want anyone to have that private info.

Please, NO public complaints or criticisms of other swappers, items received, or other type for any reason. ALL complaints must be addressed by Private Message (pm) to me. THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE!!!!!

Just one more friendly reminder-please make sure your packages have proper postage on them-if you are unsure either take them to the PO or throw another stamp on. We do not want anyone to have to incur any extra expense during this fun time. Also be aware postage could run high on this swap so if you think that may be an issue you may not like this swap.

As always please feel free to PM me with any questions or concerns-I am always happy to help.

Hugs
April

ljdugas31 01-29-2013 10:58 AM

Love it Happy sewing everyone!!!

roseirish48 01-29-2013 12:01 PM

so happy to get info so I can send out f8's and get this ball a-rollin'. Cant wait to see what gorgeous fabrics will be sent--and to see what people do with the fabric that Anastasia picked out for me to send.

Ok Darla 01-29-2013 12:02 PM

Nice big group....hello everyone

TheMamaHauser 01-29-2013 12:47 PM

If the snow lets up enough, I will be mailing out almost all of the F8's today. I'm in 2 groups and so I'm combining anyone in Pacific & Southern together into one envelope. I suppose if you're in those same groups, you'll know who you are ;)

I'm going to try something new for the pictures this time - I'm going to put a gallery page up on my business site just for the boom swaps and see how that works. I'm thinking it might also get us some new members to the QB! Once I've got it made, I'll post a link in my signature.

jaba 01-29-2013 12:59 PM

Sounds good Mamahauser. Can't get the mail merge to work, I better start writing.

moonwork42029 01-29-2013 02:28 PM

Got my labels printed so Dad can put them on tomorrow and do our notes to stick in the packages.

Remember if you have any special requests, please put them in with the f8 not on here so we don't miss them.

Yipee... let's go

joanelizbay 01-29-2013 04:02 PM

Ive got all mine in the envelopes except 2...kind of ran into a problem with cutting my fabric at the end... I either have to go back and get another half yard or send out 2 people 2 pieces..They still measure more than 11x18, just not in one piece..Would that be a problem?

Elisabrat 01-29-2013 04:06 PM

Hello!!! Wanna go for a swim??? I have the lucky job of hand addressing so all will go out this week but its one name at a time :) RoseIrish your daughter mentioned YOU PICKED out your fabric.. hum and I hear its a challenge fabric at that. I am up for it.

I glad to get this party started. Question ladies some of you have a hyperlink to your blocks in your signature area how did you do that? remember i am computer challenged so go slow on me.

last Thank you April for putting this all together for us. We do so much appreciate it. No small job at all.

LovingIzabella 01-29-2013 04:08 PM

You can send me two pieces not a problem at all :)
Hugs
April

joanelizbay 01-29-2013 04:38 PM

Thanks April! I just stuffed the envelopes and made sure you got one of the ones with 2 pieces...Hope Donna doesnt mind but she got the other envelope :) ALL my fabric is now sealed, signed..off to post office in the morning. Hope they all make it to your houses.. I put two 66 cent stamps on the one to Japan and Canada. Let me know if its not enough and Ill send you money for the difference!! HAVE FUN everyone!!!

moonrise 01-29-2013 04:44 PM

Ready to mail in the morning, except for the two international ones. I ran out of stamps, but will get some by the weekend. :)

babyfireo4 01-29-2013 05:52 PM

I'm up for getting two pieces :)

TheMamaHauser 01-29-2013 06:01 PM

For all of you who can't get the mail merge to work (that'd be me, too) I just typed them into a label template in Word and then printed them on regular paper. Typing, cutting & taping is still TONS easier than hand addressing; if you save the file, you can print a second set for mailing back.

jaba 01-29-2013 06:15 PM

Too late now, all addressed and sent, they are on the way. Look forward to receiving all your fabric and making you blocks. Some envelopes weighed at 46 cents some at 66 cents. I put 66 cents on all US and $1.10 to Canada, England, Australia, and Japan. Hopefully you will get them soon.

LovingIzabella 01-29-2013 06:25 PM

Lordy you folks are quick!! Wowsers...mine will probably be in the mail on Friday.
Hugs

Here's what everyone will be getting. Asking for just black or black on black to be used if at all possible. (also will be on note with fabric)

Dad will put the labels on the envelopes tomorrow since I printed them today so they'll be mailed out on Thursday. He doesn't know these will be for him as he isn't getting to see the notes inside so hopefully he'll be pleasantly surprised.

Most of my squares aren't f8...they are a little bit more so someone could use the piece as the background for the 12.5 x 12.5 block in case of black appliques.

lovngrandma 01-29-2013 07:23 PM

i will be getting mine together and will be out by Mon at the latest, you gals are fast, like lightening, speed, so i will be ready, getting it all together,
thanks hugs Hope

lovngrandma 01-29-2013 07:27 PM

dottie dodge 01-29-2013 07:32 PM

Wow! There are some speedsters in this group! I couldn't make the mailer thing work either so have been doing everything by hand. A slow process. But they will be in the mail by the weekend.

jaba 01-29-2013 08:00 PM

I'm hoping if I send it out quick, I'll get mine back quick. Hopefully my fabric choice will speak to you and you'll know exactly what to make. Sort of true, now I can finish some stuff I have to real quick before I start getting yours. Works for me!

His initials are E G M

He is 82 and likes cats (or at least he has spoiled mine to pieces), books, puzzles and fishing.

He loves the quilt blocks as they come in and checks them all out carefully and is sure to comment on them. He likes the simple ones as much as the detailed ones. If they are too small is the only thing that seems to get his goat.

You can use as much starch as you want because once he discovered how easy it makes things, he keeps the spray bottle full and ready to go. :D

He is my master "ironer" so if any seams are pressed funky -- you'll have to take it up with him.

Scrapper 01-29-2013 09:10 PM

OK OK I'll be the procrastinator of the group:D I've got my fabric washed......that's the extent of my preparedness heehee.......got to do the labels.....got to get stamps....blah blah blah. I am going to try to challenge myself this time and try some new piecing techniques/tools.....oooo scary huh LOL

marcialee 01-29-2013 11:47 PM

Scrapper you are way ahead of me...I don't even have my fabric picked out yet. Have been trying to finish up some other things, but will work on this over the weekend and maybe get it all out by next week. I am usually one of the ones ahead, but this time can't find the extra time. Can't wait, love this swap. Thank you April for setting it up.

TwinRiverFarm 01-30-2013 05:11 AM

Marcialee, how did that gorgeous fabric you used for the last boom come out?? We all wanted to keep it! I think it was to become a wedding gift?? Pictures!! I am working on putting together the Boom 8 blocks this week, hope to figure out photos so I can share them with you all. My f8's should go out today or tomorrow. Does anyone know if it is possible to attatch a copy of the merged labels list to an e-mail? I could send it to anyone who can't get it to work correctly. Listen to me, I sound so confident now that I did one little tech thing successfully! I probably won't get e-mail to work!

Abby's Mom 01-30-2013 05:30 AM

I hope to have all the F8s in the mail today. My fabric is a boring plain black. I put notes in most of them, and then forgot to add them for some. Ended up slitting most envelopes to be sure notes were really there. Tried to be smart and use addresses from past Booms to do some of the envelopes ahead of time and it ended up taking more time overall. Let the fun begin!

joanelizbay 01-30-2013 05:39 AM

Twin, you should be able to save the labels as a file then all you would have to do is attach it to any email you send out. I couldnt get the merge to work either but typed the address on my label form and it worked great. Hope to get several pieces of fabric next week! Cant wait to see what everyone picks!

babyfireo4 01-30-2013 06:03 AM

Wow! Did I not get the memo on the race to send out first  you guys are quick! Hopefully, I can send mine out friday. Only have about 24 of them cut, just can't figure out what to send for the rest..... guess it's time to swim in the stash and see what surfaces  Is anyone doing/requesting a side swap?

LovingIzabella 01-30-2013 06:14 AM

Mal,
I know Tam...Moo is looking for a side swap if you are interested.
I think I am already swimming in deep waters with a large and small lol. I just never know when to say no..ugh! I need a support group or is it a de-support group I need? :-P
Hugs

ArizonaKAT 01-30-2013 06:43 AM

Cutting, ironing, cutting, washing . . . forgetting to bring the list home from work. It appears that I'm a "little" behind.

cuppy 01-30-2013 06:43 AM

My fabric will go out next week, I have not purchased yet, will purchase at our quilt show this weekend. 60 vendors!!! now you see why I waited. I will be using only light neutral tones, which are off white, cream, beige, tone on tone, print on print , and white on beige. I prefer no solids ,however a few will be ok, if it is from your stash, for this will be the only colors in the blocks. I have never chose this palate before, but have seen a few quilts like this, and decided upon it. thanks to all of you , cuppy

Elisabrat 01-30-2013 07:27 AM

oooh a beige on beige.. I can do that. interesting does the contrast come out enough to determine hey that is an ohio star or a log cabin? havent seen one of those.

black on black.. ok for those without notes what did you want put with yours?

ok for dad: he likes what type blocks the most? hum an applique cat? I am scared of doing the applique as well how well they hold up in the wash.. like them for wall hangings but worry even with fusing you get ..frays at the edges. then wont dad be mad about that> lol everyone of us loved making your blocks for him to enjoy. It was an absolute pleasure to know he was sitting there waiting on go for them to come in :)

APRIL YOUR PLAYING!!! great fabrics. scared me a bit that orange one thinking holly heck what do put with that! so I am sure your envelope to me will be stuffed with that one. my luck. This is the cool thing about this swap. You work with fabrics you might never have used otherwise and it pushes me to think differently. And almost always it was successful. Seeing fabric in a new light. Kinda like.. going to the fabric store where you go oh that is pretty oh that is cool oh that is.. but we buy x fabrics instead. Well here.. we get to fabric store all sorts of things and the end results are amazing.

.

He likes all the blocks... I've done several applique cats and went around the edges several times so I don't think that is a problem. This quilt won't end up washed very often so it will be tenderly cared for with him.

Yes I am. Since I have already been certified might as well prove it right? :P
I think I will go home this evening and stuff your envelope with the orange so I do not forget lmao It is actually a beautiful print in person but I only have two yards of it so I think it would be great for my swap friends to help me out :)

Hi everyone....I will get my fabicss ready to go out this weekend and in the mail Moday. Excited to be back in another boom!!!!!

oldcatlady 01-30-2013 09:37 AM

peaking in from work....shhhh... don't tell anyone :)

I haven't had a problem inthe past with the mail merge but have with this one. it's the 1st time I'm trying on my new laptop so I'm sure it's me! I had 7 left over labels from Boom 8 that I matched up and the rest is going to be hand written :( will take me a little longer to get out.

so glad to see more internationals playing this round:)

I haven't worked on the quilt yet as I am so behind on stuff. It is for my nieces wedding and I think it will be beautiful. I have a hard time figuring out how to finish stuff off. I don't trust my judgement. I can get any pictures to post on here. I got a new computer (gateway, exp 8 and don't know how to use it).

ljdugas31 01-30-2013 12:40 PM

ok ladies i mailed out all my fabric today so be on the lookout!!!
