Boomerang 9.0 SOUTHERN O Group Thread

Boomerang Friendship Swap 9.0 SOUTHERN Ocean Group
Mailing deadline is June 1, 2013

Hello and welcome to the SOUTHERN Ocean group.

How it works:
1) You will select a fabric or selection of fabrics from your stash (or you can buy new-up to you) and cut them in to Fat Eighths (18 x 11) or (9x22) We prefer the 18 x 11 for this swap as it gives a bigger cutting area for certain blocks but either measurement will work.
2) You will send each member in the swap one F8 to work with. The person who receives the fabric will make you a block with your fabric in it.
3) You may advise the person of colors you would prefer they use or not use but please do not request specific blocks. This is meant to be a “friendship” swap where your friends pick, design and create a beautiful 12.5” unfinished block for you based on the fabric you send them.
4) In turn you will receive an F8 from each member in the swap and have to make them a block.

Rules/Guidelines:
(please make sure to also refer to the basic policies that apply to all swaps announced through the board: RULES FOR SWAPS AND SIMILAR ACTIVITIES - Updated 8 December 2010 )
1) Please make sure all fabric is prewashed prior to making the block and sending it home. You do not have to wash the fabric you receive.
2) When sending your fabric please make sure it is in some kind of sealed item (Ziploc baggy, saran wrap) with a piece of paper or even a peel-off label with your name, address and quilt board name so that the items are protected and won’t get mixed up. Please do this when returning blocks as well. (This way if for some unhuman reason the PO mangles a package the plastic has a chance at saving the work and with an address visible it just might make it home)
3) Please mail your F8 within three weeks of receiving the address list. This helps ensure we all have ample time to work on everyone's blocks.
4) Please handle all fabric received with the utmost care and place it somewhere where it won’t be lost or forgotten about.
5) In order to help keep track of the blocks sent and received I will be emailing out a chart to all members who participate so that you may fill it in as we go.
6) All blocks should be 12.5” unfinished. They can be regular pieced, paper-pieced, appliquéd-whatever the quilter decides to do. It is up to each individual. Again the feeling is to get a true friendship quilt out of this. Please do not request specific blocks as the idea is to let everyone, of every level join in and try new things and grow.
7). Please remember to trim your threads, cut your dog ears...in essence remove any excess work from the back of your block that the receiver should not have to worry about. We do not want to have any extra bulk in these blocks that are not needed (harder to quilt them :-) )
8) You may sign the back of the block if you wish to or perhaps pin a small muslin square with your name, where you live and what the name of the block is.
9) Please measure your block before mailing it. We all started somewhere but it is nice to be able to get all the blocks back measuring the same size so the quilt can go together nicely. So measure, measure and when you think it is right, measure once more
10) Please make a block that you yourself would be happy and proud to call your own.
11) This is a one block per swapper swap. You will have to make 35 blocks per large group (36 swappers in each group) or 15 blocks per small group (16 swappers in each group) (If you wish to do two groups please be aware this means you will have to mail 70 F8s and make 70 blocks or any combination of the possible group size). Please be aware of this before you commit yourself if you do not think you would be comfortable making 35 blocks in 4 months. (70 for 2 groups)
12) Please be courteous to our swappers and post when you receive either someone's fabric or a completed block. This helps us to know the postal gremlins are not at work lol If for some reason you cannot get on the board to post please let me know and I will let the members know. We appreciate interaction with all of our swappers. You can do a weekly update as well if that works better for you.
13) Have FUN!!! This swap will let you explore your creativity as you do not have to make the same block for everyone. You can try that block you always wanted to. Try new fabrics, new colors...step outside of your comfort zone in to a different box

PLEASE DO NOT SEND FABRICS/BLOCKS WITH PERFUME OR OVERWHELMING FRAGRANCES ON THEM DUE TO ALLERGIES. THERE MAY BE MEMBERS OR FAMILY MEMBERS WHO HAVE SEVERE ALLERGIES TO CERTAIN THINGS SO PLEASE TRY YOUR BEST TO NOT SEND ANYTHING THAT COULD CAUSE AN ATTACK

Also please remember when posting on the board to use members board names or just first names and not their full names. This is a courtesy to our members as the information here can be seen publicly and we do not want anyone to have that private info.

Please, NO public complaints or criticisms of other swappers, items received, or other type for any reason. ALL complaints must be addressed by Private Message (pm) to me. THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE!!!!!

Just one more friendly reminder-please make sure your packages have proper postage on them-if you are unsure either take them to the PO or throw another stamp on. We do not want anyone to have to incur any extra expense during this fun time. Also be aware postage could run high on this swap so if you think that may be an issue you may not like this swap.

As always please feel free to PM me with any questions or concerns-I am always happy to help.

Hugs
April

I will be mailing my fat 8ths on Friday

wanda lou 01-29-2013 12:30 PM

Hello all my Southern friends! I see alot of old friends and a few new ones.
F8's going out on Friday.

TheMamaHauser 01-29-2013 12:47 PM

If the snow lets up enough, I will be mailing out almost all of the F8's today. I'm in 2 groups and so I'm combining anyone in Pacific & Southern together into one envelope. I suppose if you're in those same groups, you'll know who you are ;)

I'm going to try something new for the pictures this time - I'm going to put a gallery page up on my business site just for the boom swaps and see how that works. I'm thinking it might also get us some new members to the QB! Once I've got it made, I'll post a link in my signature.

DogHouseMom 01-29-2013 02:34 PM

Well since I am sailing the Southern Ocean I'll say hello Y'all!!

This is my second swap and all y'all are new to me - loved my 8 boomers but am so happy to have a new group of folks!!

I'm going to keep saying y'all ... I'm from Chicago and if I said Y'all here I'd get laughed at. Or kicked out.

I need to choose my fabric ... yeah yeah yeah ... I know .. should have had that done. I've got it narrowed down though ... to ... well ... something in my stash!! Contemplating a small bright floral ... pretty much any color can go with it except the brown range.

Ok ... I'm going to let Y'all choose what I send.

Option 1 - half of you will get white flowers on black, the other half black flowers on white. I'll ask for solids only with white, black or grey.

Option 2 - You will all get the same fabric. I'll ask for only the colors in the fabric - which is pretty limited - white, black, grey and brown.

Option 3 - yes I do have color in my stash :) All will get the same fabric ... any added fabric/color is fine as this has pretty much everything in it already. OK ... no browns.

So ... what would Y'all rather play with?? I honestly don't care!!

Tentatively planning on keeping this one as a guest quilt. The guest bedroom is light dove grey and tan so any/all of the above fabrics will work in it.

dotcomdtcm 01-29-2013 07:31 PM

Oh, I'll admit it. I had to google the Southern Ocean . So if I am ever on a quiz show...
My fabric goes out tomorrow, a pretty floral for my pretty daughter, Molly. All grown up in her own home.

TheMamaHauser 01-29-2013 07:31 PM

I vote for Option 1. I'm a big fan of b&w.

Hi everyone, this is my first swap. I just washed the fabric. Hopefully, I will get all the pieces cut out and mail them out before Friday. Can't wait to start.

Hi everyone. I am glad to see all of you in our group. I vote for the multicolored fabric, doghousemom. I went to Chicago once and people asked if I was from the south because of the way I talked. I said " I am from south Kansas City". LOL.

Short an Sweet 01-30-2013 04:13 AM

I can do either one, but I am also partial to B&W or BRIGHT colors lol

LovingIzabella 01-30-2013 09:01 AM

I have those black & whites lol
Hello Southern Os...are you all geared up and ready to go go go?? :)

awilson 01-30-2013 09:30 AM

Hi Everyone!!! This is my first swap, and I am very excited to work with all the different fabrics. I am going to try and head to the PO today.

wanda lou 01-30-2013 02:47 PM

I know what you mean, I tried to make it to the post office today... didn't happen....

goldendog55 01-30-2013 03:11 PM

Hello everyone! I am still dyeing my fabrics, but they'll be done soon!

TheMamaHauser 01-30-2013 03:40 PM

Mine all went in the mail today. It was $0.86 per envelope and then about $1.20 or so for each of the envelopes with 2 F8's and also Canada & Japan. They raised postage prices as of 1/1/2013 - I forgot about that. I need to get some stamps so I don't have to travel to the PO every time I mail a block back to you ladies!

To a true Chicagoian ... anything south of Interstate 80 is "south".

I am NOT a true Chicagoian :)

urgodschild2 01-30-2013 04:40 PM

Hi everyone. Glad to be here. Will be sending mine out on Monday. I am lucky that my P.O is only half a block away so I generally just walk over and mail my envelopes.
doghousemomma.......Doesn't matter to me what you send. Like them all.

awilson 01-30-2013 05:18 PM

Went to the PO today and she told me .92 for each. Not sure why it was more but I didn't want to argue with a long line behind me. Peer pressure! I caved! Lol

ssnare 01-30-2013 08:17 PM

awilson, what kind of envelope did you use? I mailed 2 different finished blocks today , each was $.66. Did you wrap them in glad n press?

awilson 01-31-2013 03:03 AM

I used a letter size envelope. I put the fabric in baggies. Maybe that was it?

urgodschild2 01-31-2013 08:45 AM

Good Morning everyone. You all are going to be getting a child's print as I am making this for my 6 year old grandson Ozzie. I ran out of paper for the printer so I first have to go and get some more. Jjust waiting for the store to open.
Then off I will go. I will post a picture of the fabric as soon as i buy it. Oh did I tell you I had to go and get that too.

chewboo 01-31-2013 11:44 AM

well what a great group--I have my fabric washed--not ironed or cut--I am slow these day--as I am still recooping

ssnare 01-31-2013 12:26 PM

Don't use baggies on your return blocks or your f8s. They do make it cost more.

ssnare 01-31-2013 12:30 PM

chewboo, you are not any slower than I am. I got my fabric washed and some are cut. I got bit by a spider on my right wrist last month and my hand and arm were swollen, red streaks and very painful. I am right handed. It hurts to use my hand very much, so I am slower in sewing, cutting, etc. But we will plug along and we will still have fun.

Jannie 01-31-2013 02:37 PM

Ok, looks like I am the slow one. Won't have time until early next week to get mine in the mail. So it sounds like to wrap the F8 or block in plastic wrap to keep the postage cost down!

Jannie 01-31-2013 02:38 PM

DogHouseMom -- I know what to do with choice 3 & 4. If you send one of the black and white flowers, I will have to think about that one.

ssnare 01-31-2013 03:38 PM

You want to make the envelope as flat as you can. I found that I can get a tighter wrap with glad press and seal rather than saran wrap.

This is the fabric I picked. Hope you like it. I am going to make a quilt for my guest room. Finally washed and ironed (now I remembered why I don't wash my fabric anymore - I don't like ironing). Still have to cut. Looks like I will be mailing them out on Monday.

I thought about driving over & putting it in your mail box but then it started snowing and I forgot. I'm glad it showed up. The guy at CMR station said, "Oh I bet half of these get returned because they aren't flat." *sigh*

dotcomdtcm 01-31-2013 08:06 PM

I put 2 Christmas Forever stamps. Hope that works out. It has in the past & I had extra stamps.

urgodschild2 02-01-2013 11:06 AM

Ok I just returned from walking over to my post office. I am fortunate because it is only 1/2 half a block away. I am in every group so I am going to post this on each group so that I do not have to type it again. Everyone's F8 has been mailed. WHEW!!!!! Being in all 5 groups you can imagine the price I paid. Of course I also had to get 100 forever stamps and 200 20c stamps. One of those 100 20cents is for a member in the Pacific group who can't get to the post office. Ok I will share what I learned. All my envelope cost exactly one forever stamp. So if your end tells you different let me know. Now for the people who are in more then one group.....I put yours in a 5 X 7 envelop. Guess what....that is considered pkg. price and so it cost more then if I just put them in separate office envelops and mailed them. Go figure. So When I return your grown up block...those in several groups will get several envelops. I want you all to know that so that you mail yours just in the office envelop as it will be cheaper. Of course those overseas always will cost more. LOL. I was surprised that my office envelopes were just the forever stamp, but then this is the first time I wrapped them in saran wrap and squished them down as tight as possible.
I am now looking forward to getting F8 to start making blocks. Let the fun begin.

Dottie.....I only received one of yours for the Artic group. Just wanted you to know in case you sent this one. Maybe it will arrive today. Our postman doesn't show up until late afternoon.

urgodschild2 02-01-2013 11:14 AM

I have decided to try some different patterns from the block galore sight. I do have some standard ones that I just love and do sew up nice and I generally stay away from too many points. But I am going to try some. Ok I am shaking over that thought. But what the heck.....can't learn if you don't try.
I have been fighting allergies since last Aug. Blocked up sinuses etc. So I am now going to an allergist again. She put me on this food regime or no food....however you want to look at it for three weeks. Essentially I can eat fresh fruits and veggies and lean meat. Ok....I can do that. I am almost at the end of the three weeks...Three weeks without my beloved cheese. I am a totally cheeseaholic. Also she has me taking some minerals because the regl. med. I take for cholesterol...depletes certain minerals so you have to replace them. Who knew that one????? So after three weeks.....I still have the stuffed up nose, sneezing, etc. So now I wonder what the Allergist will do. I think I now get tested to see what I am allergic too. Isn't life fun???? Of course I sneeze constantly around fabric and I was told it's because of the Formaldahyde in it. I do wash my material so that should not be an issue. I sure hope I am not allergic to material. LOL.

Short an Sweet 02-01-2013 12:05 PM

themamahauser, I received your F8 today, I have some wht/wht with wht butterflies that I am going to use for your block, I am going pattern searching now for an appropiate block for a "baby girl" quilt

urgodschild2 02-01-2013 05:48 PM

I received squishies today from awilson and the MamaHauser.

DogHouseMom 02-01-2013 06:04 PM
